were alterward returned by French
priests, This act of barbarity was
done by the Mataafans, the German's
friends.
The news of the conflict wss re
el ved with dismay at Washington.
Officials will not publicly discus the
matter.
Germany has demanded that the
United States shall disavow the acts
of Admiral Kants and applogist for
ame. It Is needless to state that
our government will sustain Admiral
Kauts.
A new commission has been ap
pointed composed of Trip, American,
Eliot, English, and Von Sternberg,
German, and it Is expected they will
start from San Francisco on the 19th.
The real contending parlies are
England and Germany while Amer
ica Is more of an arbitrator. War
will hardly result, but the matter
must be carefully handled.

Stephen Field of tbe United States
supreme court, died Sunday evening
last at his home In Washington D.C.,
of kidney complications. He bad
been nnconcious since Saturday
morniug, and the death was palnles?.
His fatal illness began two weeks ago
whf n he contracted a severe cold.
Stephen Johnson Field was born at
Haddam, Conn., Nov 4, 1816. He
was the son of David Dudley Field
and one of four brothers, who be
came so famous, David Dudley
lawyer; Cyrus W. of Atlantic Tele
graph Cable fame; and Henry M
Field, clergyman, being tbe other
members of the great qusrtet that
made their names known throughout
the world. His early boyhood wss
spent at Btockbriilge, Mass. He
graduated from Williams college In
18.17, at the head of bis class.
In he went to Europe and
spent some time there traveling. In
November, 184!), he sailed for San
Francisco around Cape Horn, and en
tered upon the practice of law In the
Occidental metropolis. After a short
time he moved to Marysvillo.a small
mining camp, and became one of the
founders ol what afterward grew
be a thriving town. He was elected
a judge of the supreme court ofCal
in 1857 for the term of six years. In
18o0 he became chief just ice, sue
ceedlng Chief Justice David
Terry.
In 1803 President Lincoln appoint
ed him associate Justice of the su
preme court of the Unitd Slates,
and he held that position until
hlaretirment on December 1. 1897.
During the latter years of his ser
vice on the bench he was v. ry feeble
health. His term was the longest in
the history of the tribunal.
