Republicans are willing to accept
the gage of battle throwu down by
the tripods.
Fl'SOS OF fAA'TES.
Republicans are criticised because
tbey express disapproval at the
policy of democrats, populists and
silver republicans forming a fusion.
Really republicans may well express
surprise that honest politicians who
claim to hold certain well fixed poli
tical ideas should give them up for
the sake of a preseut possession of
the offices. Two parties msy prop
erly agree to vote for the same man,
but they may not abandon principal
In order to do it. At least that I the
the way it ap?ars to republicans.
An elector certainly ha a right to re
fuse to vote the democratic ticket hut
when he does and votes the populist
ticket he ceases to te a democrat.
He is a populist. Hut when a demo
crat delitsratily declines to continue
his party organization, and the popu
list and silver republicans do the
same they no longer have the right
to be known by their old names,
they in reality have formed a new
party. This has liefore been hinted.
The democratic party before 18!i
stood for free trade and hard money
which wa understood to be shiikI
money measured by the gold stand
ard. However objectionable these
idea may have been to republican
they formed the frun.lntion lor a
great parly, but they have been giv
en up for a new platform. The man
ager attempt to take the whole of
the old party over to the new party.
The silver republicans surrender
their isition as protectionist for
what they claim is free silver, but the
platform is populist, initiative and
referendum with Hat paper money.
A ssmple of populist legislation on
the currency question is given in the
bill now before congress, introduced
by Howard of Alabama published in
another column.
The populit are fixed no better.
True they have nnl of the platform.
Populist require lederal legisla
tion to put their principles into
practice. About the only doctrine
peculiar to populism demanding
such legislation is the initiative and
referendum their currency lile.ia,
ownership of railroads, telegraphs,
etc. These ideas can ha put in the
law hook only by federal legisla
tion. In the distribution of uttices,
the populists seem to get no repre
sentation in congress. It is now un
dertl that a democrat, Jmli;e Ji.hu
IWnnett, will twachfied for the 1
S. Senate. The populists get sta:e
offices, while populism demands fed
eral legislation. If Hie ticket suc
ceeds there is really nothing for pop
ulism exivpl ihe offices, even their
candidates are pledged to do inching
practically on the currency question.
The declaration of the platform for u
national money, sound, safe, i.-ou- d
ty the general government, etc is
really an approval of u.e present
system. It is antagonistic to free
coinsge, that proH to give the
mine owner the power to control
the rolnsire.

ofthe Veuezuelan crisis in December,

Then, in 1895. the net gold in the
treasury ws fU,Jii2,2i'J, and gold

more than II, 000 txxi sr day. Then
the "endless chain" was in full oper-
atiou, lrs.ii. ing the tre-tsury gold for
export ai.d for hoarding, and there
wa not the least confidence either in
the tariff, the siliticsl or in th9 finan
cial policy of the administration.
Now the "endless chain" ha ceased

President McKinley's treatment of
the Ilispano American complications
has been characterised by dignity,
HrmnesM and moderation, and the
crisis of war has found tbe country
Iu a state of preparedness which has
not hitherto existed in ita history.
County Treasurer Cady has paid

Thetripols are trying to deceive

There has been a marked decrease
in the Importation of farm products,
but an eiisily marked increase in the
importation of coffee, Jewelry, silks,
furs, aud other articles of luxury.
Tho farmers have bad an oppor
tunity to supply a very large increas
ed demand for farm pnslucts, and
have met bs foreign comts'titiou.
Thi account for the fact that not on
ly wheat, hut every other article of
farm produce ha increased in price.
