The McMinvilla Report had A rep

who saw our L. L. Whitcome aud
did him up Id these words:
Just ou the departure from N'etarls
I met briefly an interesting character
in me person I L. Whitcouib of
HilUboro. He is an ex-sheriff of
iamhill county, elect! away back
in liMia on the republican ticket, aud
w still a staunch adherent of the
party. He was deeply interested in
getting at the proper analysis of the
crazy-quilt ticket put up against
MeKluley. Being au early settler
he was thoroughly acquainted with
the Indian jargon of ( tregon, and at a
camp conwrt sang with hi wife an
Indian song. At the close he gave a
speech In tho tame tongue, picturing
the rapid passing of the Indian and
the rapid following of the white man
to hia long home. Mr. Whitcouib
was one of the very first white men
to explore Netarts bay.
Mr. Jlufu Waggener of the
Tualilau Hotel has returned from his
Alaskan trip thoroughly convinced
that the gold mines at Cook's Inlet
are greatly overrated. There are a
few good claims but they are of course
already occupied. The whole coun
try has been carefully proxpected and
there is nothing new to And. Mr.
Waggener left July 27th. Many
more came by the same boat. About
soo men are still there who will re
turned as soon as they ran awure
transisirtion. There is an abund
anee or fixs! at the mines and there
will lie no suffering even If a winter
ha to be spent there. The water
had been too high for working the
mines up to a few week before Mr.
Waggener left but now the season is
fairly open and opperation will Is
continued till the first of OctolsT
when Jack Frost will seal up the
mines. The digging are iu the
creek beds. The water is turned to
one side by wing dams while the
claims are worked.
Wm. Mcl.inn was seriously injur
ed near Andrews Lumber Co's saw
mill last Saturday. He was felling a
tree which in falling struck another
which caused the first to slip back
ast the stump. In its career Mr.
McCinn wa caught between the
stump and tree so that he was badly
crushed about his lulus and thighs.
Hut for Ida presence of mind aud
strength of arm enabling him to
raise his body he would have beeii

that his muscles are badly crushed but
the nerve trunk Is Intact, hence the
report that he is paralyzed Is not cor

are t o sore to allow him to move

One of our local butchers notes
that cattle suitable for beef are scarce.
Two year ago he could pick up
hands of seven to ten bullocks in
many neighborhoods, but now he is
not always certain ot getting one.
It would seem that cattle breeding
for beef would be profitable. Can it
be that too many veals are curried
to market? It is probably true that
Portland draws from the Willamette
valley the veals used there, while the
beef come from the great grass
nlaln east of the Cascade near
enough for getting mature bullocks,
but too far away for marketing tne
calves.
