dispatch from Sonora, California,
staling that his friend, Martin Man

mining chums, w hom ho hadn't met
for thirty years, and who lives In So

Journey and stopped at the hotel in
the town before going to the farm or
his friend. Not aps-arlng tho next
morning, the hotel peoi''0 went to
his room and found him dead, t r
riiae trouble was without doubt the
cause of his sudden death. He was
known to have had trouble with his
heart U-fore leaving Oregon. Mr.
Pfanner at once went to California to
bring the remains of his friend to
Oregon for burial. It Is understood
that he will arrive home to-morrow,

The Washington county Speed and
Driving Association has been organ
ized, with Mr. J. C. Hate for presi
dent. Jt Is the purpose of the associ
ation to have annual meetings of
horsemen at Iliilsboro, or rather to
make iliilsboro one of the points on
the northwestern circuit. To that
end the Iliilsboro fair grounds will
be improved so as to make our
county a desirable meeting place.
lhe track will bo widened aud
graded on the curves, and a new
gratia stand built as well as a new
tenue. The association has in view a
fall exhibition of farm products and
rami mock. The seej contests,
however, will be earlier. The asso
ciation sent Messrs. W. Redmond
and John Northrop as delegates to
1'ortlaiKl on Tuesday last, to arrange
with the managers of the north
western circuit. The valley circuit
starts at Central Point. Coming
north It stops at F.ugene City, Al
bany, Independence, Salem, Port
laud and ends at Iliilsboro. The
dates for the Iliilsboro meeting are
July -J, 3.1 and 4th. These were
not obtained without a struggle, for
the Portland eoplo wanted those
days. Messrs. Redmond and North
rop had odds against them, but they
carried their oliit. Mr. Tongue has
leased the track at the fair grounds
to the association for a term of years,
on such terms as will justify some
sulMtantial Improvements. It Is In-
temletl to make the July meeting
the largest and most interesting
event of the kind that has ever been
held lu the county. An adjourned
meeting of the association will he
held In Iliilsboro on Saturday, Jan
uary ISth, to settle a few details that
were omitted at the first. All iier-
sons in the county interested In horse
breeding and speeding are invited to
attend this adjourned meeting.
The coffee club, having been enter
tained by the tlremeu, have adopted
the following sentiment In recogni
tion of the courtesies shown on that
occasion: "The kind thoughtfulness
aud appreciation of our efforts, as
shown by the 11 re men, by the ban
quet tendered to the members of the
colli club, ami their husbands and
friends, is highly gratifying to the
ladies, showing that the small begin
ning which they have made to assist
our fireman in their laudable efforts
have been recognized f ir above their
worth. Receive our thanks with the
assurance that the impetus received
from your interest in the club will
encourage us to new effort."
Mr. John Cor u in, who lives a few
miles north of town, was found wan
dering about in a semi-conscious con
riition. In the neighborhood of Glen
cis, and brought home. Mr. Cor urn
started out on Monday morning, on
horseback, to solicit for the sale of
fruit trees, and when found It was
evident that something was wrong,
Dr. Tamiesie was called, and gave as
his nninion that the alierration of
mind was nuite probably due to a
fall from the horse. Later the horse
was found with the saddle turned,
which seems to confirm this opinion.
Mr. Corn in is a worthy citizen, and it
is hoMil that no serious injury to the
brain has resulted.
