(an Wednesday next the republi

every republican iu the several pre
cincts ahould recognise it as a duty
to attend and help select representa
tive men to attend the county con
vention. The purity and efficiency
of the county administration dends
upon the action of the primary con
ventions, and no good citizen can
lay aside the responsibility that rests
upon him to give himself and his
neighbors economical and wise offi
cials. If men are nanied and elected
who are unfit for; the position held,
the elector who neglect the prim
ariea ought not to complain, for. be
himself is' responsible lb the objec
tionable candidate. There can be no
employment among men more noble
than the government of society, and
our American Institution require
that each man shall do his part. '
THA T SXICL'TJ VE &KSSIOX.
The populist went into one of
their executive session last Saturday
after a temporary organization had
been effected at the county conven
tion. Almost the firt thing these
boncHt reformer, these pure poli
tician, these men of principle, did
was to send for a committee of tht
democrats. Well, there was no such
committee in existence, but some five
member of tho party In their in
dividual capacity went over. Th
first question by the populists wok
"What will you do?" The gentle
men stated that they had no authority
to make any propoitiin, nor could
they bi.el the individuals of theli
party to any lino of action. Thej
thought, however, that If the opu
lists would nominate a ticket of un
questioned character, men whose lift
is a guarantee of honesty and faith
fulneM, that democrat Would Is
inclined to vole for them. Thi
aroused a storm. "Who dared to
question the purity of any membei
of the great reform," said one dele
gate. Yet that same delegate forgo
that the very Invitation on which th
presot.ee of the gentlemen depeudl,
was a notice sufficient to put them
on their guard. It Is iolitlcal trick?
which the democrat fittrod. A tew
words of explanation restored har
mony, ami more talk was hail, w het.
Anally one of thestokcsmen observed
that perhas the convention woulo
like to confer privately, and craved
permission for himself and lib
friends to retire. This was granted.
A move toward the door was arrested
by a "delegate" who had question
"Well, what Is It?" "Say, wo would
like to know If there are any tnon
democrats in the county Ulde you
Qve. " A. representative more
courteous than the Interlocutor
raised the point of order that tht
visitors were there by Invitation,
and deserved the treatment usually
accorded to gentlemen and should
not be Insulted. The chair decided
that the sint of order was well
taken, and a he was able, aMloglcd

The populist ticket is no doubt an
average list of names from tho opo-
crat party, but the convention jmssetl
by some of the best men to take up
obscure timber. All iu all It will
probably ttoll the entire vote of the
party, and the members appear to
think there are votes enough to elect.
Hut the high, moral poaltlou which
tho party has prated of so loudly,
went to the wind on Saturday. The
managers tried their Wst to trade
with democr.it, but the latter saw
the cloven foot and tacked off. Kven
tho delegate could not be Honest
with each other. Mr. Wilkes had
stood for sheriff nt other flections,
when he polled the full strength ot
his jstrty, jet at a critical stage he
was publicly Invited to stand aside,
that a "new man" might be taken.
If a man I disquallfled for office Is?
causo he was beaten with other on
tho ticket, then the whole party,
having been defeated, should retire
and let successful opponent or "new
men" hsvo preference. N, the
ticket named last Saturday i not re
markable for "reform," except that
peculiar kind.

That was a remarkable resolution
adopted by the populists last Satur
day, which abridged the rights of a
eitixen to aeek in a convention of
citizens party nomination to office.
Neither the republicans or democrats
as far as is known have ever denied
the rlirht of a citizen to ak to be
named for an office on the party
ticket. The only question has 4jcen:
"Has he friends enough among the
delegates to put him then?" Can
populist consistently go among the
elector of the county and solicit
their suffrages? One would think
not. Yet after all consistency Is not
a" political virtue practiced univer
sally by that party. An Instance.
In the nomination of sheriff a new
name was demanded, yet when It
came to clerk, the same old candl
date was chosen. An even with the
"new man" an Indistinct remem
