Seed Treatment For Smut on (¡rain Many successful farmers who are planning banner grain crops next year 10 h»-lp win the war are going to treat their seed for smut.. This disease which is carried about by micropic spores i« so common that crops free of disease cannot be expected unless the seed is treated to kill the spores. It the treatment is properly given the crop will be practically free from smut in Oregon, except in a very few places where the ground is infect d. Smut cuts down the yield, in jures the grain for seed, damages the quality, reduces the grade and lowers the selling price. It is con trolled at the O. A. C. Station farm either by formaldehyde or bluestone treatment, b o t h of which are explained by H. I*. Bar-s, the plant pathologist. Formaldehyde treatment For maldebyde (for malinj.full strength, 1 pint; water, 40 gallons. Run the grain through the fan ning mill to remove smut balls, damaged kernals, etc. Partly fill tank or barrell and put grain in. Unless known to be free of smut, pour wheat in loose, stir with hoe to bring smut balls to surface,and skim off.
