MODEL ROAD DBAS.
The next trip the drag should be start
ed n little nearer tbe middle, and tbe
last trip over the road the drag should
work close to the middle itself. Small
ridges of earth will be thrown in the
horse track nnd smeared by the round
side o f the log smoothly over the road.
The smearing o f the earth by the drag
is called puddling, and it tends to make
Ibe surface smooth and hard and turns
off the water, especially after the sun
comes out and dries It thoroughly. The
road is always dragged after It has
rained and not when it is dry. With
a good atroug pair o f horses and a well
built drag one man can drag about
three or four miles of a road a day.
This is the best possible way to main
tain good earth roads. In every coun
ty some farmer along each four miles
o f road should own a drag and drag
the rood when It rains, nnd he would
find the road in good condition when
he goes to market.
The necessity for drugging the road
conies about from the fact that water
stays on the road surface Decause It
cannot drain away tnto the side
ditches. I f the road has been properly
dragged the water will run off the sur
face. Then If the ditches are properly
taken care o f the water» will drain
away ami lea ie the roadway In splen
did condition. Tbe crown o f the road
should be at least ten Inches higher
than the outside. Rain on a properly
crowned road will run quickly to the
sides and not soak Into the surface.

One o f the greatest needs o f Ameri
can cities today In order to preserve
the vitality of children Is the estab
lishment o f playgrounds, easily acces
sible to all children o f a community.
It Is said that the physical and mental
are Inseparably Joined together, and If
one Is defective the other will suffer In
sympathy.
It appears impossible to
develop the child physically In any
way so effectWely as through active
play. Formal gymnastics can accom
plish relatively little. The child must
have some end to gain that arouses Its
enthusiasm and demands agility and
strength and endurance. Then Its
whole bodily mechanism will work to
gether in harmony to secure this end.
