CUPID GETS HARD
JOLT IN HILLSBORO
County Clerk Luce Refuses to
Grant License to Polk
County Man.
Cupid, the little love god, is
meeting with all kinds of trouble
since the new law, requiring
men who wish to be married in
this state to present a certificate
of health duly signed by a
licensed physician, to the county
clerk, before a bliss certificate
be issued him.
Last Satnrday a Polk county
man appeared at the desk of
County Clerk Luce, in Hillsboro,
and requested that he be grant
ed a license to wed. But Luce
turned him down on the ground
that he did not know whether
the physician who made out the
certificate is entitled to practice
i or not. He said that where a
man came from an outside
county armed with a physician’s
certificate, he should also have a
sworn statement from the
county clerk that the medical
examiner is entitled to practice
in Oregon. Clerk Luce alleges
that if this ruling is not fol
lowed, it would invite fraud that
might be wide spread,
The new law requiring men to
present a certificate of health
before they may be granted a
license to marry in Oregon, is
causing many couples to take
little jaunts into Washington,
where they have the knot tied.
Vancouver is a popular Gretna
Green for lovelorn couples, and
j the ministers over in the mili
tary town are taking in many a
bright gold piece that should
remain in Oregon. Never a rose
without its thorn. Selah.
Mrs. Rose Olmsted and family
are visiting in Portland this
week.
Paul and Benjamin Abraham
of Patton valley were in town
Friday.
Miss Sarah Lyman of Portland
is visiting in this city with rela
tives.
Mrs. Mary Voget, after hav
ing visited in this city for a few
weeks, left Sunday for her home
in Walla Walla, Wash.
Miss Mildred Thomas left Sun
day for Los Angeles where she
will visit with her aunt.
