We have heard of an editor
who calls the citizens of his town
scandal-mongers one week and
follows shortly with the state
ment that he has no fault to find
with the fine people of his com
munity. First rub them up and
then rub them down, “ I would
that thou wert hot or cold.”
Farmers and fruit raisers from
all sections of Washington coun
ty report that conditions are fav
orable for a yield equal to that
of any season for several years
past, and the increased popula
tion in the west will consume
most of the surplus product, sav
ing the raiser the necessity of
shipping to the east for a mar
ket. This will give prosperity a
boost and make for greater con
tent and happiness.
The chairman of this school
district has requested that sug
gestions be made for a name for
the new High school building.
We suggest that it be called the
Washington High school. We
have a Lincoln school, therefore
it would be appropriate to name
the new building after the Fath
er of his country, who shares un
dying fame equally with the
Croat Emancipator.
A crew of men has been at
work the past week grading the
road between Cornelius and
Hillsboro and tilling in the chuck
holes. It is to be hoped that
this road will be rocked this
summer, as there was a stretch
of about a half a mile of it that
was one of the woist roads in
Washington county the p a s t
winter. The writer drove over
it a couple of months ago with
one horse and an empty light
wagon, and it was all the animal
could do to draw the vehicle
through the deep mud. It pass
es understanding how a team
with a heavy load could struggle
over such a road. This is one of
the niost traveled highways in
the county, and it is a disgrace
to allow it to remain unrocked.
Every citizen in Forest Grove
should work to bring the annual
encampment of the Grand Army
of the Republic of Oregon to this
city next year. Forest Grove
has one of the finest camping
grounds in the state, and all con
ditions are ideal for having the
old hoys in blue with us next
year. Should the Grand En
campment be held here, thous
ands of soldiers and their friends
will come to Forest Grove. This
will be a great advertisement for
the city, and besides it will be an
occasion of real pleasure and en
joyment to have the old defend
ers of our nation with us in large
numbers.
