T he work on th e canal across th e peninsula opposite V icksburg w as pros ecuted m ainly by S h erm an ’s corps. D redge boats w ere bro u g h t to assist th e labors of th e troops, a n d It w as planned to ex cav ate a w aterw ay sixty feet w ide and nine deep. T h e exca vation w as nearly com pleted w hen the riv er rose suddenly, broke dow n the b arrier a t th e upper end and flooded the whole peninsula, d riving th e troops on to the levee to escape drow ning. T he direction of th e can al w as such, however, th a t th is body of w a te r sim - ply flooded its banks, b u t produced no scour through It. A fter this, w ork w as continued for ab o u t tw o w eeks by th e dredge boats, but the C onfederate shore b atteries soon got th e range of the la tte r so accurately th a t th ey w ere driven off, an d w ork on th e canal w as then abandoned.
