Washington.—Oregon is inter ested more largely than any other state in the pension bill for vet erans of the Indian wars, now in conference. Out of 900 of these old soldiers, 400 are located in Oregon. The bill which raised their pension from $8 to $30 per month passed the house August 5, and on Tuesday it passed the senate, but the amount was re duced to $12 a month. Representatives Rucker o f Col orado and Hawley are making efforts to have the amount re stored to $30. They have seen Wood of New Jersey, one o f the conferees. He is favorable to making it $20, and Hawley hopes to get it up to $24. After Wilson’s Goat. The Best Pictures Obtainable Uncle James Wilson, who tells the farmers when to can their corn and how to curry the aspar agus beds will have to look to his laurels or the wizard of the Great Northern will get his goat. Talk about your boys’ corn clubs; what do they count for when a mere railroad king, with only hearsay knowledge o f agri culture, promises to make the A. D. D ’s, (dreary doctors of agri culture), turn green. But Uncle James usually has a card or two up his sleeve and he is likely to show these amateur farmers a few tricks. Portland.— “ Parcel post has come to stay. It.is a good thing, and places in the hands o f the small merchant and dealer a weapon to fight the big eastern mail order houses. The new system will bring changes in trade conditions and will bring the consumer in closer touch with the progressive dealer.’ ’ These are a few of the things told the delegates attending the Oregon Retail Hardware and Im plement Dealers convention re cently by Arthur E. Sugdon, manager o f the Pacific Hardware and Steel company, in his address “ How Can a Jobber and Retail Dealer Under Parcel Post, Best Cooperate?” In his address Mr. Sugdon went deeply into the parcel post system, and declared the present zone rate systenj is the most feasible of all plans considered. “ With proper stock and pro gressive management,” said Mr. Sugdon, “ there is no reason why you cannot hold your own, but rather increase your business in outlying districts. Many more progressive merchants, doubtless are preparing to issue price let ters or small catalogues. They recognize in parcel post an op portunity to compete with the mail order houses with their own weapons, and while the struggle will not he easy by any means, and I feel that large distributors by mail from prominent points will always he existent, they can, under the present system do no more harm to you, who are pre pared to fight them, than was possible under the express sys tem. “ This is an age of specializa tion. Your strongest competi tors, the mail order houses, are actively engaged in figuring out what they can do to take your business away from you, and if you avail yourself o f the facili ties at your command under the present conditions, they have a hard proposition to overcome.” Ten Senators and Representa tives are lying awake nights try ing to think up the best way for Uncle Sam to help improve the country roads o f the nation. They compose a joint committee appointed for this purpose. A good many other congressmen who have long been giving the road problem absent treatment and the mind cure are also trying to solve the riddle. The fact is that the farmers have become in terested in the road problem and their organizations, such as the Grange, have urged federal aid. Congress thinks a lot of what the farmers say, and so the good road question gets pretty serious Buy your coal o f Dancer Bros. consideration. A new carload just arrived. 8tf •.
