Latin American Insurrections.
The Mexican revolution against Pres
ident Madero made considerable head
way early in the year, the rebels cap

victories, driving the insurgents into
the mountains. A new difficulty oc
curred when Vera Cruz arose in insur
rection. led by Felix Diaz, nephew of
tlie former president. This uprising
was speedily suppressed, however, and
Diaz, with his other officers, was cap
tured. two o f his lieutenants being put
to death.
There was also an insurrection in
Nicaragua.
American marines were
landed to protect property nnd lives of
our citizens.
On Sept. 26 General
Mena, a lender of the Insurrection, sur
rendered to the federal and American
forces.
A rebellion o f the negroes in one of
tlie Cuban provinces nlso caused the
landing o f American forces, nnd there
was some talk o f intervention, but the
disturbance was soon quelled. Cu'>n
held her presidential election in the
fall without the presence o f American
troops.

End of Turko-Italian War.
The war lietween Italy and Turkey
dragged on through ttie early part of
the year, with no very heavy fighting
on either side. The Italian nn\y took
the Islands o f the Aagenn. The use o f
the aeroplane in war had further dem
onstration, Italian aviators dropping
bombs in a Turkish camp, killing ten.
On Oct. 15 tlie pence protocol was sign
ed between the two countries. By its
terms Italy gained practical control o f
Tripoli, but gave up tlie Aegean islands
that Greece is now battling to free.
In Great Britain the most notable
events of the year, aside from Eng
land's part in the general European sit
uation, were the coal strike in Febru
ary nnd March, the continued dis
turbances by tlie suffragettes and the
home rule fight. The coal strike threw
out o f employment upward o f 1,000,000
workers nnd threatened for a time to
become worldwide, there being also a
strike in Germany and trouble threat
ened In France and the United States.
The British government interposed, and
the contest was finally settled by the
passage o f a minimum wage law satis
factory to the miners.
France Subdues Morocco.
There was some friction between
France and Spain over the division o f
Morocco, tint it was finally adjusted,
France retaining control o f all o f it,
except some towns and a small amount
of territory nearest to Spain. Mulal
Halid abdicated as sultan.
Among the sporting events abroad
were the quadrennial Olympic races at
Stockholm, in which the United States
took most o f the track and field events,
and the annual boat race between Ox
ford nnd Cambridge, Oxford winning.
Other events o f the year were the
honoring o f William Marconi, inventor
o f wireless, by a life seat I d the Ital
ian senate; the completion o f tlie A l
pine tunnel through the Arl mountain,
six iiiul three-quarter miles long: the
sinking o f the steamer Texas under
the Turkish flag, slxtv-six passengers
being drowned, and the review o f sev
enty-two war aeropiauea and dirigibles
at Paris.
