    BIG FLOOD SPREADS
Miles of Mississippi levees Gone
and Waler Rising.
Many Known Dead and Property Loaa
Immense-Food and Suppliee
Are Being Sent.
St. Louis — The flood area in the
Mississippi valley was widened and
lengthened Saturday.
The big gov
ernment levee west o f Hickman, Ky.,
protecting the Reelfoot Lake district
o f Kentucky and Tennessee, has bro
ken, and it is believed many square
miles will be inundated. This section
is comparatively thickly populated
and loss o f life is expected.
Much
suffering and property damage seems
certain.
In its forward rush the Mississippi
reached a flood stage .almost to Nat
chez, Miss., and hundreds o f men are
at work on the levees in the newly
menaced territory, stopping small
breaks and strengthening spots weak
ened by the terrific strain.
As the river is still rising at Cairo
and the Ohio slowly was mounting
higher as far up as Louisville, with
smaller streams all down the line
pouring unprecedented
volumes o f
water into the Mississippi, the lower
river district faced a crisis.
Six hundred and thirty-eight miles
o f the Mississippi is Beriously affect
ed, that being the distance between
Columbus, Ky., and Vicksburg, Miss.
The greatest strain, from which the
levee is apt to break at any time, ex
tends from Columbus, Ky., to Helena,
Ark., a distance o f 315 miles.
The flood death list probably was
brought to 18. This was not positive,
however, as reports o f loss o f life
}*ave proved inaccurate in some in
stances and doubtless persons have
been drowned in remote settlements
and the fact not known.
The property loss was conservative
ly estimated at $1,500,000.
Relief
work is going on as rapidly as inter
rupted transportation facilities allow.
At Hickman, Ky., 3,000 persons are
sheltered in tents provided by Federal
and state governments.
Food is being supplied in all locali
ties where the local supply as been ex-
haustd. There is little suffering from
hunger.
TROOP TRAINS ARE HELD
UNDER EMERGENCY ORDERS
Philadelphia— Rolling stock for the
transportation o f 10,000 troops from
Fort Mott, New Jersey, and Fort Du
pont, Delaware, to some unnamed
point in Texas is being held in the
yards o f the Pennsylvania railroad in
this city. This action by the officials
of the road is under direct orders from
the War department at Washington.
The existence o f such an order, the
preparedness o f the railroad company
and the fact that there are not more
than 500 troops at the two posts
named and that they are o f the coast
artillery arm o f the service, shows
conclusively that the War department
is preparing to meet an emergency.
To make up the necessary quota it
will be necessary to draw on other
nearby posts for men.
The order to the Pennsylvania rail
road covers standard coaches, sleeping
cars and box and flat cars, as well as
cars for horses. The box cars will be
used for transportation o f artillery,
ammunition, tentage, harness, quar
termaster and commissary stores, as
well as field equipment, such as ovens,
cooking utensils, etc.
The Pennsylvania officials are bend
ing every effort for the emergency
call o f the War department and a
large number o f cars o f all descrip
tions are concentrated in the various
yards o f the company in and near this
city. These cars are on sidings in
various situations and are ready to be
placed in service at almost an in
stant’s notice.
Peary Praises Both Men.
New York — Rear Admiral Robert
E. Peary, retired, who discovered the
’orth Pole, is o f the opinion that
both Amundsen, the Norwegian, and
Captain Scott, the Englishman, at
tained the South Pole. He expressed
this view Saturday evening in an ad
dress at a celebration marking the
third anniversary o f his discovery.
He was presented a unique medal,
made up in part o f a meteorite which
he brought from the Arctic regions in
1897,
and commemorative o f his
polar achievements.
Armed Men Will Bar I. W. W’ s.
San Diego, Cal.— If any o f the bands
of Industrial Workers o f the World
that are reported to be headed this
way shall get to this city, they will
have to evade the vigilance o f a force
of armed men deemed amply able to
cope with any attempted invasion. At
San Onofre, near the county line,
j where 50 deputy constables are now
encamped, every train from the north
is searched.
The roads and bridges
are patrolled day and night.
Levee Breaks With Roar.
Hickman, Ky.— With a roar that
could be heard for miles, the Missis
sippi river flood burst through the
government levee five miles west o f
Hickman is racing over the Reelfoot
Lake district, and 150 square miles o f
fanning lands will be an inland sea.
Grave apprehension is felt for the
safety of farms in remote sections of
the sparsely settled country.
