PATERSON Furniture and Pianos No Term* on Prices MM Forest Grove, Oregon Several Hindu temples are near us. They are located in groves or on mountain tops, are rude stone structures, and have idols in them, but no priests. One of them has seven stone al tars, each made of a single block of stone and resting on stone posts some eighteen inches in height. On a visit to one of the temples I found a quantity of blood, indicating a recent sacri fice. There is also near us a rock formation which the Indi ans believe to be a petrified snake. The snake is a sacred animal and pilgrims come from a long distance to pray to this snake. Women who desire child ren pray to a snake. Not long ago a servant of one of the Y. W. C. A. missionaries was converted. Soon after his conversion his baby died and a little later another baby died in the same house. At once the relatives and neighbors raised the cry that these deaths came as a punishment from the gods, because the man had become a Christian. They told him that he must get a goat and sacrifice to the gods and that he must not return to work for a Christian woman. The man got the goat, but he returned to work, and th e ! missionary says she thinks his faith is still unshaken and that he got the goat merely to keep s the peace. Several wedding processions have passed our house this sum mer. In all the wedding proces sions that I have seen in India I have never seen a bride that seemed to be more than ten years of age. The bridegrooms may be of any age. As widows do not remarry, widowers marry girls who are at the most not over twelve years of age, because it is a great disgrace for a girl not to be married by the time she is twelve. I think you can imagine the unspeakable agony resulting from such a system. Indian Christians do not practice child marriage, and Christian widows remarry. Surely if Chris tianity did no more than emanci pate womankind, all of our mon ey for missions would be well spent. Many an Indian woman is a grandmother by the time she is twenty-five years of age. I have seen the child of a twelve-1 year-old mother. It is pictur esque to see a child bride, but it makes one’s blood run cold to think what goes on behind the walls of the genanas. School opens on the 13th of July so I will soon be at work again. I have had letters from several of my Indian students during the summer and I shall be glad to see them again. I do diead the heat. .This week they have had a maximum 107 de grees F. in the shade and a min imum of 88.9 degrees F. Think of a temperature of 90 degrees F. in the coolest part of the night. Rain is overdue and if it doesn’t come before long we will be threatened with famine. Rain will lower the temperature,* but still people play tennis with the sweat running into their shoes. It has been pleasant here at Al- mora—68 to 72 degrees. Sincerely your friend, . j A r t h u r C. B ocgf . s s . Reid Christian College, Luck now, India.
