Some hours later Patrick, bearing a
candle and accompanied by Korali.
crept upstairs softly to the spare bed
room where Bob. face downward, re
posed In uneasy slumber—and In a
bed. Norah sank to her knees by the
bedside.
“ T b ’ poor, poor la-ndl” she murmur
ed. laying her band gently on his
-j shoulder.
Bob groaned and In his sleep shrank
from the touch. The movement dis
placed the nightgown—Kathleen’» —
and disclosed a black and blue shoul-
, der.
“ Tb* Uttle spalpane!’’ Korah whis
pered tenderly.
T t ’i not from flghtln’ , T warrlnt ye,”
Patrick whispered. “ It’s on bis back."
“ Don’t you bit me again, Jim Thomp
son!" Bob screamed In bis dreams.
"W hen I’m big I ’ll kick you.”
“ T b ’ little dtvill” Patrick whispered
compassionately.
“ H e’s like Paddy ’ud ’a’ been." sob
bed Norah.
“ Arrah. Norah. darltnt, ye do be mak-
ln’ a fool av yersilf over tb’ la-ad that
was nivlr borrn.” Paddy was the boy
I for whom the FUnns’ hearts had al
ways longed, but who never came.
With deep satisfaction o f soul Bob
opened his eyes on a new day.
“ I ’ ll stay here.” he said aloud.
And stay be did. Bob, In the arro
gance o f hts bo.vlsb egotism, taking
his welcome for granted, while to the
Kllnns. big hearted and Instinctively
hospitable. It never occurred to wonder
at the boy’s presumption. The arrange
ment thus tacitly established proved a
happy oue.
So it wus that when Policeman
Flinn set out that noon to his duties
Bob accompanied him. to revisit yes
terday’s battletleld. where henceforth,
by right o f conquest und Patrick's pro
tection. be wus to reign supreme. And
when the day’s work wns done to
gether they returned home to “ Irish-
town.”
A few days later their bonds were
finally riveted.
It wus Saturday night and the fami
ly o f Flinn was gathered In the
kitchen, which was also the living
room. Over the table In the corner
Bob counted the earnings o f the week.
To this task the assistance o f Molly
and Kathleen wus needed, since, a his,
Bob's notions o f arithmetical values
after the sum o f ten was reached were
hopelessly vague.
“ Three dollars and fifty-three cents.’’
Kathleen announced proudly.
“ H e'll be layln’ aside a bit av It. a
dime or a quarther mebby, f r tb' |

sisters whin they come, won't ye.
Bob?” Norah suggested piously.
But Bob had planned other uses for
his money. He laid to one side the
53 cents and gathered together the S3,
which he carried over to Norah and
dropped. Jingling, into her capacious
lap.
“ An’ what's this for?”
'T a k e it.” said Bob.
"Y e mane kape It f ’r ye?”
"N o ; keep It fer yourself.”
“ An' why should 1 kape it?” de
manded Norah.
"T o pay fer me bed an' grub.”
“ Aw ay wld ye. ye little rapscallion!
Kape yer money: ye’ll be nadlu' It f r
clothes an' th’ like. Ye can stay here
without payin' yer way an' welcome."
"But that's cbnr’ ty. ain’t It?” Bob
demanded directly.
“ Well, yes—sometimes.’’ Norah re
turned slowly. “ But not In this case,
whin It’ s frlnds Is gtvln’ to ye.”
“ Ain’t goln' to be u ehnr’ty boy.”
Bob Insisted. ” 1 got to pay.”
“ But why?” Norah Insisted.
“ I don't know." Bob returned slowly,
with a puzzled frown. ” 1 ain't a cheap
skate. You'll keep It. won’t you?”
“ Not a clnt av It." Norah declared
flatly.
Bob gave no answer to this declara
tion other than to collect the coins and
place tbein In his pocket. Then he
took his cap from Its peg and without
a word or backward glance made for
the door.

A t a special meeting o f the
city council last week the South ?
ern Pacific railroad was granted
franchise for right o f way from
the eastern part o f town to enter
on First avenue and to the
Christian church on Third street,
where they will enter the prop
erty o f Dr. Large and proceed
to A street. The franchise also
covers A street from First ave
nue to the south part o f town.
Depot grounds have been select
ed on the east side o f Main
street.
It is hardly likely that the
franchise will ever be used on
A street by the S. P., and what
i the move rpeans can only be a
matter o f conjecture.

ORENCO TREES ARE REALLY CHEAP
Preliminary work on the saw
mill is going on rapidly.
Mr. Callahan is clearing consid
erable acreage o f fine bottom
land, a donkey engine being
used for the purpose.
B. F. Purdy has men engaged
to clear between 80 and 100 acres
o f hill land for orchard purposes.
Some trees appear cheap, but are really expensive.
Other trees appear expensive, but are really cheap.
You
cannot buy high-grade, productive land for the same price
as poor land sells for.
You cannot buy Oak lumber for the same price as Fir
lumber.
It is Quality in Trees that Counts.
W e grow our own trees in our 1200-acre nursery.
Our
land was selected specifically for nursery purposes. It pro
duces the very choicest type o f trees possible to obtain any
where, with stalwart tops, strong fibrous roots; in short,
strictly first-class, sound, healthy, fully matured trees.
There are none better grown, and they are Really Cheap;
because they are such as will “ Make Good.”
I f you need any N. Y. Pippin, Spitzenberg, Winesap,
Rome Beauty, McIntosh Red, Jonathan or any other com
mercial or home variety, just drop us a line stating your re
quirements.
W e also have some o f the best peach trees in Early
Crawford, Elberta, Foster, Fitzgerald, Gillingham and other
good varieties we have ever grown.
If you want Peach Trees, you can’t get better.
Don’ t Delay Ordering Too Long.
