AT HILLSBORO
Mother Has Narrow Escape in
Attempting Rescue of
Her Child.
Monday morning: last, between
6 and 7 o’clock, fire destroyed
the old
Commercial
hotel
building: at Hillsboro, in which
little Howard Thomas, four years
old, was burned beyond recogni
tion. The mother, in attempting
to rescue her little son, was fa
tally burned and died yesterday
morning at a hospital in Port
land. The first knowledge of the
fire was given by the children,
who ran down stairs informing
the mother that little baby broth
er was on fire. The fire is said
to have originated from matches
with which the children were
playing in a room of the second
story. The firemen promptly re
sponded to the alarm, but were
unable to do but little else than
direct their efforts to save the
adjoining building. The hydrants
are said to have been so frozen
that they were out of commis
sion for a time.
The building was an old wood
en structure and stood one block
west of the Electric depot, along
the car line. Many hundreds
of Washington county people
have appeased their hunger in
tlte old hotel.

other aspirant for public honors
were in the field, the fight was a
one-sided affair. G. S. Allen,
who was elected mayor, received
75 votes. Schultz received 68
votes, Wirtz 76, Barber 75, John
son 77, and were elected council-
men. Markham received 75
votes for recorder and Robt.
Wirtz, 76 for treasurer. There
were only 80 votes cast. Last
year there were 240 votes cast,
with but one ticket in the field.
