Mammoth’ s Bone Dug Up
Part of the femur of a mam
moth was found in Hillsboro,
Saturday, while workmen were
digging a well for the Hillsboro
water system. The bone was
found 11 feet in the earth on a
beaverdam deposit and must
have been buried for thousands
o f years. It is well preserved
and measures six inches in diam
eter. Search was made for other
portions o f the skeleton, but
nothing was found, and it is evi
dent that the femur had been
washed some distance.
This is the first discovery of
the bone o f a mammoth in this
vicinity which could be well de
fined as such.

titled ‘ ‘TheUnfaiIing Detective. ”
This sermon will be well worth
the hearing especially to young
men and young people.
The
morning theme will be “ Different
Phases of Church Fellowship.”
As next Sunday is World’s Tem
perance Sunday, there will be
some special features in the
Bible School session that will be
worth hearing, and the Christian
Endeavor Society is also planning
something unique for their ser
vice at 6:30. You cannot afford
to miss any o f these services. A
cordial welcome extended the
public.

VISITS NEW YORK
CIGARETTE FACTORY
_______
“ Others may take their after
dinner cigarettes, but just make
a toothpick for mine,” said Fred
Lockly, manager o f the Pacific
Monthly this morning. He has
recently returned from « month’s
visit in New York, and after ex
ploring certain sections o f the
east side arrived at the conclus
ion quoted above.
Mr, Lockly went into a dimly
lighted cellar on a squalid street
where he found hundreds o f
frail Italian and Jewish girls con
verting “ snipes” plucked from
spittoons and gutters into cigar
ettes, These cigarettes are sold
unbranded to manufacturers, who
put them out under the various
names and brands, he was in
formed.
The “ snipes” are taken from
the filth of saloon floors and cus
pidors, from the under ground
dives, from the streets and the
garbage can. Germs of every
disease known to man may be
found lurking in the folds of
these snipes. It is said that the
maker takes no means to rid the
tobacco of the filth contained in
them.
“ I was told a man simply took
his life in his own hand when he
entered one of these places,”
said Mr. Lockly, “ but I started
out to see things and I didn’ t
want to overlook anything. My
companion refused to enter the
cellar with me and even urged
me to remain in the daylight so
I went in alone.
“ Under the dim gas jets iheru
were hundreds o f girls wedged'
together stripping the folds o f
snipes apart. They make no
secret of their business and I
was informed that the snipes
were obtained from every pos
sible place—saloons, dives, gut
ters and everywhere. They did
not hesitate to say that the cigar
ettes when made up were sold to
the
large contributors, who
branded them and sold to the
smokers of the world. Included
in the sale o f cigarettes are bil
lions of disease germs o f every
description, which may account
for the emaciated appearance of
the average inveterate cigarette
smoker.”
The girls in the establishment
frhich Mr. Lockly visited were
pale and listles; many are afflicted
with tuberculosis and other di
seases contracted, it is presumbed,
while handling the germ laden
tobacco.
Mr. Lockly said he did not see
the remains o f tobacco chews on
the table at which the girls
worked but nearly every other
variety o f discarded tobacco was
in evidence. Tillamook Herald.
The Commercial Club met
Tuesday evening. The Hillsboro
delegation, representing t h e
Washington County and Hills
boro Development League, were
present. The Clubs o f the Coun
ty are expecting to co-operate in
the matter o f advertising this
county and the local Club has on
hands some interesting work.
The meeting was well attended
and arrangements made for many
of our citizens to visit Hillsboro
Club next Friday evening.
