Cor vallis—That the district about A storia is a rich one for development along the lines of vegetable gardening is the dictum of Prof. A. G. B. Bouquet, upon his return from a trip to that city , where he was called to consult w ith those interested in scientific cul tural methods. “ The climate and soils in general are more suited to the growing of crops th a t do best in the cold seasons, such as cauliflower, cabbage, celery, onions, and practically all small fruits! rath e r than such crops as watermelons, cantaloupes or peaches, although some peaches have been grown there.” said Mr. Bouquet, discussing his trip. “ Mr. R ist has built up a big repu tation for some of the finest straw ber ries ever grown, on the upland soil, while a num ber of growers have been making large profits on the lowlands, which are for the most p art tide lands, growing vegetables such as I mentioned. Mr. B. H. Miles, of Astoria, grew some celery last year which produced a t the rate of $2,000 per acre, and the demand w as very much larger than the supply. Chinese growers are dem onstrating w ith great success the possibilities of th e climate and soil. One difficulty the growers there have to meet is th a t of a home m arket, since they have no encouragement from local merchants, who prefer to make shipments by w a te r from Portland. The college is sending the farm ers of the district lit eratu re descriptive of the beat scien tific methods in gardening, and insti tu te s for their further assistance are b eing planned. There are thousands of acres of good cranberry lands there still aw ait ing developm enL There are very good opportunities for young men to go down and take charge of these lands. I t helps to beat down th e price. “ In some localities, (E astern ) un sprayed fru it has in some manner escaped serious dam age by insects and is fairly good, b ut as a whole the worms have consumed th e bulk of un sprayed apples so th a t they will be unfit for storage. h “ The bulk of the space in eastern storage houses has not been constract- ed for, and very few apples have gone into storage yet. The amount of storage space still available is a good indication of the am ount of fru it th a t will be harvested, and it will certainly pay a good profit to hold all apples that are in any way o f good q u ality .’’ U SE ROAD DRAG NOW .
