The Missing Link.
This day will be offered to public
Inspection, at a commodious room,
opposite tbe new Inn, Surrey side of
W estm inster bridge, at one shilling
each, the Ethiopian savage. This
astonishing animal Is of a different
species from any ever seen In Europe,
and seems to be a link between tbe
rational and brute creation, as he Is
a striking resemblance to the human
species, and Is allowed to be the
g reatest curiosity ever exhibited In
England.—From the London Dally

Portland—The F ifth Annual Rose
Festival will be held during the week
beginning June 5, 1911.
This decision has been reached by
the executive com m ittee of the Rose
F estival.
The second week of June
was accepted as being th e logical and
natural one for finding the “ Queen of
Flow ers” a t her best.
Deference in the selection of dates
was made to the Portland Rose Society
which holds its annual rose exposition
so th a t the show featu res of the expo

tim ed w ith the mid-season of rose
blooms.
N ext year, the grand celebration
which has made Portland
famous
throughout the country will be pre
pared on a scale of g rea ter magnifi
cence and elaborateness than any o f
those th a t have gone before. ItJ is to
be the only g rea t exposition held on
the Pacific Coast in 1911.

devised any sort of en tertain m en t th a t
will prove an attractio n to the tra n s
continental to u rist traffic for n ex t year
th a t w ill in any sense com pare w ith
the Rose festival of Portland.
This situation has made strong ap
peal to the g rea t railroad trunk lines
of th e country and they have already
asked th e ir rep resen tativ es in the

tak e fall cognizance of th e fact and

Three H ardest Words.
A learned man has said th a t tbe
three hardest words to pronounce In
the English language are "I was mis

fault,” Goldsmith says, “his confession
showed more greatness than all his
victories.”
