Crop Estimate.
Salem—Standing between two arils,
a record-breaking Drouth in the Wil
lamette Valley and an unpreeenented
scourge of the red spider, the hop crop
of the State of Oregon has suffered
immensely the past week or ten days,
and the yield, conservatively estimated
from the standpoint of both the “ bulls
and bears,’ ’ will fall approximately
5000 bales below that of last year. The
yield of last year was about 84,000
bales, and the latest estimate for this
season ranges between 82,000 and 100,-
000 bales.

Much complaint was received from
the brewers on account of the laxity or
apparent indifference on the part of the
growers last season in respect to the
harvesting of their crops, as a result
of which the Oregon crop, which ordi

Eastern and the English markets, suf
fered a severe slump in the quotations,
and a serious setback in demand. The
early deliveries were such an inferior

Portland— ‘ ‘ Europe is clam oring for
Oregon pears,” writes H. B. Miller,
Am erican consul at Belfast, Ireland,
in a recent letter to C. C. Chapman,
manager o f the promotion bureau o f
the commercial club, and he follow s
this with the advice that pears as well
as apples be exhibited at the forth
com ing Portland Apple show.
Mr. M iller presents such sound argu
ments for this action and points out so
plainly the benefits that are likely to
result front it that the com m ercial club
w ill earnesly consider the proposition
with the view o f having both fruits ex
hibited.
“ I was form erly a fruitgrow er in
the Rogue R iver v alley ,” w rites Mr,
Miller, “ and am now planting quite a
large orchurd near Sheridan, Or., and
am therefore immensely
interested
in this movement.
“ Two values are to be derived by
placing pears on a parity with apples
in your show— one is the inspiration
fo r the grow ing o f larger and better
fru it and the other is the advertising
it w ill give the pear-grow ing industry.
I am convinced that the Oregon pear
has as great a future as the Oregon
apple. It requires great attention to
encourage and cultivate it.
It also
needs labor and attention to encourge
the, production.”

Pendleton— Though grain grow ers in

It is understood that the average price
was about 81 cents. The regular quo
