A C H IN G , BURNING AND INFLAMED State Engineer Lewis Says Irrigation Work is Revelation. Salem— A fte r traveling 1,000 miles through Central and Souhern Oregon, half o f the distance by automobile and stage, State Engineer John H. Lew is is back at the state captiol and reports that development work and advance ment o f Carey act projects are a revel ation to him. “ During the past few years the de velopment work has been remarkable,” he asserts. “ A t Prineville they are expecting a big rush o f settlers be cause o f the recent opening o f the road land grants and prospects are bright for a branch o f the Oregon Trunk up Crooked river. “ A t Laidlaw the indications piont to a reorganization o f the Columbia Southern project and it is probable construction work w ill be resumed for the purpose o f reclamation o f 30,000 acres o f valuable land. “ Irrigation development is causing signal activity at Bend. In addition to this factor, timber, railroad con struction and waterpower development are all opening a great era fo r that already prosperous community. Lot- that sold fo r next to nothing on the main street o f the town ten years ago are now going at $4,000. Many new houses are being erected and a great rush o f settlers is expected. “ Forty miles south o f Bend heavy machinery is being assembled and con struction work is beginning on an irri gation project to water 30,000 acres. Development work here is in charge o f the Deschutes Land company. The main line o f the Oregon Trunk w ill go directly through this project and the Natron-Klamath line is to pass within a few hundred feet o f the dam site in Crescent Lake, which supplies water for the project. La Pine is the town- site for this development work and there is now talk o f moving Rossland, the old town, to La Pine so that it w ill be on the railroad. From L a Pine al- reay can be heard the sound o f blast ing on the Natron-Klamath line, where work is being carried on over the mountain. Every blast is cheerful news to the people o f the Deschutes. “ A t Paisley the 12,000-acre Carey act project is being delayed because o f conflict in water rights. “ A t Lakeview the dam and main canal o f a 50,000-acre private project are nearly complete and the land under the canal sold. “ Perhaps o f all prospective projects in Southern Oregon the one in Warner Lake valley I found had the more nu merous interesting features. This is 40 miles east o f Lakeview and $30,000 has already been expended in surveys looking to the development o f 100,000 acres o f land. This valley is 80 miles long and runs from five to 15 miles in width, between rock bluffs 3,000 feet high. The land here w ill be developed by the state under the Carey act. The company doing the work is under $7,- 000 bonds to make a complete inves tigation and is apparently going ahead in good faith, notwithstanding there are immense obstacles blocking the path. “ A canal o f 1,000 second-foot capac ity w ill have to be constructed for 15 miles along an almost vertical rock c liff and three miles o f dikes, 40 to 50 fe e t in height, must be constructed across a peat bog, in addition to sever al storage sites, long flumes and in verted siphons. “ The tract, however, is very desir able, and lies well fo r irrigation, hav ing an excellent climate, and with railroad facilities, which have been definitely promised, may prove very feasible to irrigate. Portland— That Portland w ill reap fu lly $2,000,000 as a result o f the N a tional Wool Growers’ convention and the National Sheep show January 4, 5, 6 and 7, 1911, is the b elief o f persons prominently identified with commercial activity in the city. The National Wool Growers’ Con vention and Sheep Show, the first ever held in Oregon, is expected to bring into Portland fully 25,000 dele gates and persons interested in the sheep and wool business. Members o f the Portland Commer cial club and Oregon Wool Growers’ association met with George S. W alk er, secretary o f the National Wool Growers’ association, and formulated plans for the largest convention and show ever held in the history o f the sheep or wool industry in the United States. A number o f innovations are to be introduced at the Portland show. Among these w ill be an exhibition of collie and shepherd dogs, o f which the Northwest has many breeders and fan ciers. This exhibition will be for both' exhibition and “ working” animals. The latter w ill be “ worked” as on a sheep range for the edification o f the visitors. Arrangements are being made by C. B. MinUn, secretary o f the show, for a monster exhibition o f Angora goats simultaneously with the sheep show. Alw ays heretofore at the annual show this feature has been neglected, but a t the January show it is planned to make this a stellar attraction. “ The brand o f mohair grown in Oregon ex ceeds that o f any part o f the United S tates," said Mr. Minton, “ and as the industry is much followed in Oregon, we hope to have fully 1,000 thorough bred Angora goats at the exhibition.” N ot only w ill awards be given to prize sheep, but the fat stock and mutton w ill have a special department with cash awards. This is also an in novation. Negotiations have been opened to obtain the armory for the sheep show and the convention sessions. F R U IT IN JE O PA R D Y . ATCHISON GLOBE SIGHTS.
