Sherman county intends to make a
record for itself in wheat production
this season and while it is not likely
that all previous records w ill be bro
ken, the showing o f the grain fields is
pleasing to all concerned.
Cool weather at a time when the
moisture in the ground was not too
plentiful, was the saving grace this
season. For several weeks weather
conditions in Sherman county have
been close to the ideal, and the grain
has in consequence ripened very slow
ly, but surely.
During the critical
period— when the fa ll wheat was put
in the “ dough,” hot weather would
have pulled down the prospects to an
alarming degree.
W hile it is very true that the spring
sown wheat is not all out o f danger,
with present weather conditions con
tinued fo r awhile longer, nothing ex
cept a strike o f harvesters could possi
bly stop Sherman county from giving
an unusually good account o f a very
good all around wheat producing sec
tion.
Good farm ing is one o f the secrets
o f Sherman’ s generally good showing,
and whenever nature helps out a little,
the outcome looks like magic.
Sher
man county wheat growers know how
to farm and they are practicing what
they know.

when Professor Bernhard Boeggild, o f

the efforts of Philip Bates, publisher

induced to come here and address and
visit with the people for three days—
July 18, 19 and 20.
The professor and his w ife w ill reach
Portland Sunday, July 17, but immedi
ately upon their arrival Mr. Bates will

Track laying has been completed,
thus closing the gap between Lebanon

Decides State Entitled to
Irrigation Money.
Washington — Secretary Ballinger
after g ivin g careful consideration to
appeals made to him by Representa
tives Ellis and Hawley before they
le ft for Oregon, has come to the con
clusion that Oregon is entitled to share
in the distribution o f the «20,000,000
irrigation fund made available by con
gress just before adjournment, and it
now seems quite likely that extension
o f the Um atilla project westward with
a view to irrigatin g 60,000 acres more,
w ill be authorized, and that part of
this fund w ill be allotted to begin con
struction.
Secretary Ballinger points out repeal
o f section nine o f the reclamation act,
which was permitted without protest
from Senators Bourne and Chamber-
lain, relieves both the president and
himself o f any obligation to apportion
further funds to Oregon at this time,
but personally the secretary believes
Oregon should be shown consideration,
particularly as it is the second heaviest
contributor to the reclamation fund,
and has never been given a square
deal by previous secretaries o f the in
terior.
.
There are but two projects in Ore
gon to which funds can be allotted, and
it is certain Klamath can receive noth
ing.
