Hill Admires Blooded Horses.
M errill— Louis W . H ill and party
paid M errill a v is it while on their tour
o f inspection o f the interior sections
contiguous to the route o f the H ill
road. The party was entertained at
luncheon in the handsome ranch home
o f N . S. Merrill, the pioneer farm er of
this part o f the country, whose place iB
just outside the town limits.
The la
dies o f the town served the lunch and
all the business men and townspeople
were there to greet the distinguished
guests, who were accompanied from
Klamath Falls by two dozen prominent
citizens o f that place.
The party filled seven autos.
Mr. H ill made a b rief address, say
ing he had not been entertained in any
finer ranch home in the whole state
than that in which he met the M errill
people, and predicted that the lands in
this valley would be doubled in value
within two years.
» The annual horse rodeo had just been
completed in this part o f the country
before Mr. H ill’ s arrival, and after
the luncheon was over the party assem
bled on the lawn, where the fine horses
and mules of the M errill ranch were
passed before them for inspection.
Then the autos were boarded and a run
o f ten miles down to Tulle lake was
made, where a v is it was paid to the
“ Poplar Farm” owned by J. Frank
Adams, the most noted horseman of
this section, and his fine horses and
brood mares afforded a sight fo r the
railroad man to understand where so
many o f Oregon’s extra good horses
are bred.

“ safe and sane” , Fourth o f July, yet
the celebration here w ill be the great
est yet undertaken.
Instead o f the
usual method o f raising funds by
charging admission to the different
events, everything w ill be absolutely
free. The celebration w ill last three
days beginning Saturday, and the pro
gram includes three baseball games,
dances, moving picture shows, reports
by rounds o f the Jeffries-Jghnson fight,
athletic contests, band concerts, public
speaking and probably a parade.
O wing to great danger o f fire and
runaways, the council w ill be request
ed to prohibit fireworks o f any kind.
Hotel men and restaurant keepers
are also to be asked not to raise prices
during the celebration.
E very effort
w ill be lent to make this a notable
event in the history of this section of
Eastern Oregon.
T o Build Stone Roads.
Toledo — Road building machinery
has been installed by the county court,
preparations at the quarry are being
rushed rapidly and the work o f crush
ing and placing the rock on the Toledo-
Siletz wagon road w ill be begun at
once. When this modem road is com
pleted other roads w ill be built and
soon Lincoln county w ill be noted for
her good roads, one o f the essentials in
any county.

Baker City— J. H. Baisley, a farmer
livin g west o f the city, who has one
o f the most modem homes in Powder

The water is piped about 6,000 feet
from mountain springs, which not only
guarantees a flow o f pure mountain
water, but furnishes ample Are pro

stopping at North Yakima, Seattle,

Coe says 600 persons have left Fargo

Jeffries Wants Hood
River Apples.
Hood R iver — The commercial club
received from Jas. J. Jefferies a re
quest fo r a box of Hood River Spitzen-
burgs.
When Jeffries went through
Hood R iver on his theatrical trip he
was presented by some admirers with
a box o f Spitz. When he got down in
his training camp at Rowardennan,
Cal., he began to long for the flavor of
the apple he got in Hood River. He
told everybody around him that he
had never eaten anything that had so
pleased him and he wanted some more.
An admiring friend who had been to
the camp was told by Jeffries o f his
wish and the friend told him he would
be in Hood River soon and would send
him a box. The friend says that next
to his w ife there is nothing he likes
better than a Hood R iver Spitz.
Klamath to Celebrate July 4-5.

Washington, May 28.— Presenting
a series o f tables, Senator Smoot today
addressed the senate with reference to
the condition o f the farmers o f the
country, as compared with their con

“ While the prices o f practically all
commodities have shown some advance
during the last few years,” he said,
“ the products o f the farm show a
much greater advance than do the
prices o f the products o f the mines and
factories.”
He gave the follow ing specifications:
Corn, 118 per cent; wheat, 88 per cent;
cotton, 92 per cent; oats, 132 per cent;
rye, 118 per cent; barley, 126 per cent;

Commenting on
general conditions, Mr. Smoot said:

untrue the charges o f bribery made
against him in connection with his
election to the senate. Upon leaving
the chamber at the conclusion o f his

affairs in order and caught a late train
for Chicago. In his address Lorimer
made emphatic denial o f all the allega

at him but at his bank.
