squadron th a t has preceded the A tlantic
b a tth sh ip fleet on its voyage around
the w orld, arriv ed in the low er bay yes­
terday.
T he M aine has been in w ireless com ­
m unication with the com m andant of the
y ard here since M onday m orning T he
m essages have caused considerable stir
am ong the officials o f the yard, who
refuse to reveal th eir significance. F or
the first tim e this year, w ireless o per­
a to rs have been forbidden to disclose
the contents o f the m essages.
It is understood th a t the M aine will
stay in port here for three weeks, and
a fte r a cruise will later re tu rn for a
general refitting. D u rin g the present
stay the vessel will go to the K ittery
drydock to have her hull scraped.
T he Main» and the A labam a sailed
from H am pton R oads as units of the
battleship fleet. T h ey were detached
from the fleet at San Francisco and
sent ahead to prepare the way.
T he M aine’s last port was the A zores
T he A labam a is expected to reach New
Y ork tom orrow . She left the Maine
last W ednesday.

Lake H u ro n , northeast of here. N o w ord
has been received from there since the
fire.

people hom eless, and th ere is not even an
adequate supply of w ater.

B erkshire m ountain region in western
M assachusetts and the foothills of the
F ree m ountain range in southern V er­
m ont w ere covered w ith a thicR smoke
pail last night from fires which have
hurned over thousands o f acres o f tim ­
ber land. Some of the fifes are assum ­
ing dangerous proportions. T h e most
serious forest fire last night was re ­
ported east o f Bennington. Vt., where
hundreds o f square m iles o f practically
unbroken w oodland seemed threatened
by the blaze.
