H o u se in J u n e .
W ashington, April 28.—W hen Preai-
ent Roosevelt calls to order the opening
session of the great White House con
ference on May 13, there will be g a th
ered in the East Boom of the Execu
tive Mansion the most notable assem
blage of men in the public eye th a t has
ever met in the history of the United
States.
The governors of all the states have
signified their intention of being pres
ent at this eonferenee, and each will
bring w ith him three men, carefully
chosen from among the learned of his
state, to act as advisers in the conven
tion. Besides the governors and their
advisers, representatives of all the 1m
p ortaut national organizations, the wel
fare of whieh depends in greater or
less degree upon natural resources, will
be in attendance, and further, the pres
ident has invited five special guests,
chosen for their superlative fitness, to
act as “ advisers at la r g e ” to th e con
ference.
Grover Cleveland, the only living ex-
President of the U nited States, will,
he alth perm itting, be odc of these ad
vigers. The others will be William J.
Bryan, who hopes to be president; An
drew Carnegie, industrial king; Jamee
J. Hill, railroad monarch, and John Mit-
ehell, leader of labor. Every candidate
or the presidential nomination this year
with the exception of Secretary Taft,
whoso duties in P anam a will prevent at
tendance, will be there.
Looking at the meeting purely from
its historical side, it properly may bo
said th a t never before in the country's
history have the governors of all the
statue assembled in convention for any
purpose whatsoever. Considered simply
as an epoch marking event the eonfer
enee will easily take rank with any as
sernbly of public men ever held in the
civilized world, for at this meeting the
ontire government of the United States,
in the persons of th a t governm ent's
heads, will be assembled at one time. I f
for no other reason, the public will be
interested in the conference beeanse of
this fact.
