Early Legislation to Restrict the Use of the Weed. One of the curiosities of early colo­ nial legislation is the laws enacted against the planting and the use of to­ bacco. Evidently the magistrates and eiders of those da>B regarded that ‘‘creature called tobacko” as one of the many emissaries of the devil, against whom It was their duty to wage constant warfare.
