Beeently a prominent taxidermist of
St. Louis was taking a party o f visit
ors through his establishment. He had
some very rare specimens o f big game
flsli, both o f the sea and river, besides
a large collection o f birds of every
clime about the walls.
“ Is that stuffed, too?" asked a lady,
indicating the lifelike form o f a small
pet dog which sat motionless upon the
hearth.
The taxidermist frowned and return
ed very Indignantly:
“ Madam, we do no stuffing here. We
stretch our hides over plaster o f parts
forms. The day of stuffing Is past, and
no up to date establishment does it."
1 he party was taken upstairs,
through the rooms where the real taxi
dermy Is done. They had expected to
see hides l>e!ng crammed full o f saw
dust, shavings nnd perhaps hair. No
such thing was seen, however, and in
place o f this were men anti boys mold
ing out the forms o f deer, antelope.

very much In the same way as the
terra cotta cornices are molded to
grace the com ers o f buildings. The
hides after going through the cleaning
process are stretched ttghtlv over the
plaster form, which indeed Is more
astlng than the old fashioned manner
of stuffing them.
