N O . 23- |H I L L S B O R O MAN K IL L E D BY TRAIN J. H. Donaldson, of Hillsboro, Was Deaf and Did Not Hear Warnings. James H. Donaldson, aged about 60 years, was run over by a Pacific Rail way & Navigation Company engine in North Hillsboro Saturday evening about 6:10. Engineer Charles Follett was at the throttle, and the engine was returning from taking wood. The en gine was backing up and was not run ning over 10 miles an hour. Donaldson was badly mangled, but his face was untouched The old gen tleman was very deaf, and although the bell was ringing, evidently did not see the locomotive until it was within 20 feet of him. He was pushing a wheel barrow in front of him and crossing the track at right angles. Upon see ing him the engineer did all in his power to stop the engine. Coroner E. C. Brown called a jury, which acquited the engineer of any blame, and found that the accident was unavoidable. Donaldson left a widow and two children, one of whom, the youngest, is at home. The other is Mrs. John Beauchamp, of Lyle, Wash. This is the first fatal accident that has occured on the Pacific Railway & Navi gation Company’s line. The Pacific Railway & Navigation company began construction on the Tillamook end of the line Monday. Last week about 20 teams, wagons, scrapers and other tools and a large force of men were sent overland from this end. The crew will be increased as fast as men can be obtained. A large force is at work near the summit on this side and work will commence in a few days on a large tunnel 1,400 feet in length. Track has been laid to Buxton, a distance of 17 miles, and the steel gang commenced laying again Satur day. As soon as the bridge is reach ed, about a mile out of Buxton, the company will begin laying steel on the Y at Hillsboro and the switch to the o classes are being held here dur- new lumber mill in course of construc |the meeting of the institute as the tion.
