Salem —T he state of Oregon has as­
serted title to 4,500 acres of land in

county, and q uestions the rig h t of about

from th e governm ent under th e hom e­
stead law s. In o rd er to determ in e the
rights of th e state and th e settlers, the
governm ent has assigned a special agent

Though th e s ta te ’s claim is adverse
to th e settlers, th e re is no in ten tio n on
th e p a rt of th e sta te land hoard to oust
th e settlers from th e ir hom es. On the

claim w ill be a protection to th e set­
tlers, for it w ill rem ove all doubt as to
th e v a lid ity of th e ir title . If th e in ­
vestigation should re su lt in a decision
th a t th e s ta te ’s claim is good, a ll bona
fide hom estead entrym en w ill be given
an o p p o rtu n ity to buy from th e state at
th e m inim um price of $1 per acre.

m ent or not. If they cannot, th e soon­
er they find it o u t th e less w ill be th e ir
loss. If th ey can, th e d eterm ination of
th a t fact w ill leave th em w ith in d is­
p u tab le title s.
In th e case of th e W arner valley
lands th e state sold th e sw am p lands to
men o th er th a n th e settlers, and litig a ­
tion has th u s far re su lt« ! adversely to
th e settlers. In th is instance th e state
w ill se ttle th e question of title before
selling th e land, and th e n , if it be de­
cided th a t th e sta te owns th e land u n ­
der th e sw am p land g ran t, w ill give
bona fide hom esteaders a chance to

Vetch Has Come Into Popular Favor
and is Raised Generally.
E ugene — F arm ers in th is county are
nearly all in th e m idst of hay harvest,
and for two weeks all energy w ill be
directed tow ards ¡ u ttin g in th e hay for
m arket or for w in ter use. The crop is
th e best th a t has been seen here for
years. A ll kinds of grass has grown
b etter th a n usual and on account of a
shortage a year ago th ere is an in ­
creased acreage.
T here is an immense" am o u n t of
vetch, w hich has proven to be one of
th e best fodder crops ever introduced
h ere, for th e trip le reason th a t it is
very nourishing, yields a heavy crop
and enriches rath e r th a n im poverishes
th e land. Its use has become general
and nearly every farm er raises m ore or
les» of it.
Less grain w ill be c u t for hay th an
usu al, on account of th e abundance of
th e purely hay crops.
