nothing whatever to do with the mis
chief here. However the Indepen
dent insinuates in this manner, and
implicates not only McNamer, but
Landlord Laughlin, in the following
language:
“At the appointed time, the other
conspirators, Judge Conder, S. A. Brod-
head and Rollie Watson, failing to
catch the boat for Astoria, took an
overland steamer, with Bill Easter as
captain, for Fores t Grove. At Walt
Smith’s they met John McNamer, who
gave them all the pointers necessary
and agreed to return to Forest Grove
in time to assist and get them out of
the scrape.
“With this information the trio con
tinued their trip to Forest Grove, arriv
ing considerable after dark and enlist
ing landlord Laughlin in their enter
prise, who was to see that they did not
oversleep themselves.
“During the night, Bill, to prevent
too close a watch being kept on the
balance of the crowd, entertained the
citizens of the Grove and the marshal
with several vocal selections, among
which was “In the Good Old Summer
Time” with original variations.”
The Board of Trade Again.
The Board of Trade directors met at
Judge Hollis’ law office last Saturday
night and transacted more important
business.
In the matter of furnishing the ban
quet on February 22nd, it was decided
to ask the Laughlin, Colonial and
Sloan hotels to submit a menu for a
dollar a plate. The matter will be
further decided next Saturday night at
another meeting of the board. The
ladies of the Congregational church
society who were asked to furnish the
repast, decided at a recent meeting not
to furnish the banquet.
Secretary Hollis was instructed to
extend an invitation to the managing
editors of the Morning Oregonian,
Telegram and Journal, to be present
at the banquet.
The Gun Club Meet.
At the regular meeting of the Forest
and Stream Rod and Gun Club, held
at Roe & Buxton’s store Monday
night, the following officers were
elected: President, J. S. Buxton, re
elected; vice president, C. B. Stokes,
reelected; secretary and treasurer,
J. J. Wirtz.
It was moved and seconded that the
last named officer get all his blue
rocks free of charge, as compensation
for his services.
It was decided to hold a regular
meeting the first Monday in each
month. Arrangements were also made
to hold a smoke social on the next
regular meeting night, March 7.
The retiring secretary reports as
