It is now mid-sum mer and the roads are at their best for the season. The fathomless mud holes which abound in such unlimited num bers during our season of mist are all nicely filled in with some of that sur plus mud which awaits but the fall rains to render the roads again impas sable. Of what value has all that road work and money expended to level the road bed been if the roads are allowed to go back to their original condition? Grade up the roads, rock them now while it is possible to haul fair loads, and save the money expended this spring. No piece of road is more needed for daily use than is the road from the depot to Main Street, yet the city and county go on neglecting it and creating for ourselves the appear ance of shiftlessness and unprogTessiv- ness as well as making it more difficult to interest outsiders in the growth of our city. Are the Board of Trade and Civic Improvement Society taking a nap, or are they away on an extended vacation getting a much needed rest? The Democrats have at last decided upon a candidate and a platform. The candidate is as strong as could be found in their ranks, yet the choice and his gold standard declaration must be rather a hard pill for the Bryan wing of the party to swallow. A furth er gall-stone to Bryan must be the serene pleasure with which Grover Cleveland is enjoying the situation. As to the platform itself not much re mained for the convention to do but to endeavor to assume the credit for republican measures which have done credit to the nation, and to rail at the administration's work of the past eight Times were never more prosperous than now and Forest Grove never more thriving. We have about 100 new homes going up within the city limits and various other improvements are in progress. We have also the proverbial kicker who sits around on dry-goods boxes and slowly shakes his wise head and predicts a future slump in city property. However these homes are not for sale nor for rent but are occu- sied for home purposes only. Does this indicate a speculative tendency? We think not. When a house for rent cannot be found in a city you can rest assured that that city is not in any immediate danger of a set back ur der conditions that exist here. States congressmen, and ten men from each city and each county to be named by the mayor and county judge respectively. This is certainly a step in the right direction, and nothing but much good can come out of it. It is to be desired that the delegates from this city will be named at once by the mayor! and that they will be present in the convention. Downs—Delicious ice cream. Downs’ pop com—The best on earth. Sir Thomas Horne, the president of the Canadian Pacific railroad, made recently a tour of inspection over the Pennsylvania line from Philadelphia to Pittsburg. Sir Thomas was much pleased with the service and cuisine of las dining car. lie inspected the kitch en and showed great interest in the skilled maneuvers of the cook. The cook, who was something of a wag, described to his distinguish ed visitor the kitchens of the gro.’t New York hotels, where the wal.s are of glass, the floors of vitri-ul brick, the tables of white marl)!'! and the cooking utensils of German silver. “A great hotel chef,” he said, “has from fifty to seventy-five as sistants under him. I know one of these chefs, and I visited him two weeks ago. His assistant cooks were all young women—the prettiest lot of young women I ever saw. “ ‘Why, Gaston,’ 1 said to my friend, ‘what pretty girls you em ploy “ ‘Indeed, they are pretty/ said he. ‘Plain cooks won’t do here.’ ” A W onderful Clock. A wonderful clock has just been completed by a Bavarian clockmak- er after nineteen years of labor. It tells the seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years and Christian festivals. The course of the sun, moon and constellations is given and eclipses shown. The clock has been regulated to keep all these things until 2899. The clock con sists of 2,200 parts and has 112 wheels, while it is worth $8.750. Pres. Andrew Graydon and Sec. L. Y.
