Jim Sloan Dead
About 8 o’clock Saturday morning,
James P. Sloan, commonly known as
Jim, was found dead in his room
in the rear of the Forest Grove
hotel, which has been his home
the past two or three years. Coroner
C. L. Large being absent from the
city, Justice J. H. Wirtz was called
and a jury summoned, which after
careful examination, rendered a ver­
dict of death by his own hands, by
firing three fatal shots into his ab­
domen, with a small 38 caliber re­
volver of the double action kind, at
which time he was sitting in a chair,
near a half open window, and in which
position he was found dead by one of
the hotel attendents.
The shots from the gun had ignited
his clothing and when found were
burning, the smoke filling the room
with a stiffling odor. The revolver had
fallen to the floor and in its cylinder
were found 4 empty shells, but only
three bullets had entered the body,
one just below the heart causing im­
mediate death.
James P. Sloan was bom in Sheri­
dan, Chatauqua county, New York, in
the year 1855, and with his parents
Mr. and Mrs. Chester Sloan, came by
the Isthmus route to California, thence
to Oregon, arriving here in 1861.
For two or three years Mr. Sloan lived
in Eastern Oregon in the wilds on a
cattle ranch at which time James, then
a lad of 8 years, was of great help to
his parents, the family then removing to
Forest Grove and engaging in the ho­
tel business. He resided with them
until he went to Tillamook county where
he took up land and made his home
until two years ago, at which time he
came back to Forest Grove and remained
until his death. During most of his
life he had been a constant sufferer
with a form of Bright’s disease, which
of late caused him such intense pain
that it is supposed he sought to take
his life while suffering with the terrible
agony. With all his peculiar dispo­
sition he had many friends, and his
