Vol. 2. % Forest Grove, Washington County, Oregon, Thursday, June 30,1904. MARTIN & CO.:—The history of Oregon covers but one century, 1905 is its centennial. Yet from almost every country in the world and every state in the Union is infused the life, energy and blood of its representative men of all classes and trades. Among the illustrious and progressive business men of Forest Grove who have stamped the impress of their personality upon the community for integrity, energy, and progressiveness, is the above named firm. They have operated here for nine years and enjoy a well established volume of trade. Mr. Martin is an old Hudson Bay representative and operated for many years for the company in furs, etc., making his headquarters at Mackinaw and Livingstone, Montana.—Gateway to the Yel owstone Park. He is an expert lead manufacturer and was in the business for a number of years in Cincinatti, prior to coming West. CITY MEAT MARKET:—Too much consideration cannot be given that class of a city’s industries which caters to the daily wants of its inhabi tants. Especially is this true of meats, therefore one should buy his food of a dealer who thoroughly understands his business and can be relied on every tim e . These gentlemen fill the bill and Messrs. Saelens & Spieschaert, proprietors, leave no stone unturned to provide the citizens of Forest Grove with the choicest fresh, smoked and salt meats, as well as fish, poultry etc. to be found on the market, anywhere. PIONEER DRUG STORE:—Our drug stores must certainly come in for prominent mention and none by better right than the PIONEER. Mr. C. F. Miller, the skilled and registered pharmacist of this enterprise has operated in this line twenty years and he has been in Forest Grove ten years. His prescriptions are com pounded from absolutely pure drugs and here one receh es just exactly what he pays for and as a consequence business is always brisk at this establish ment. A full line of drugs, chemicals, perfumery, proprietary medicines etc. is kept in stock and the entire estab lishment is run on correct, up-to-date commercial principles. Mr. Miller is a native Oregonian of the PROGRES SIVE type. GOFF BROS.— In entering a record in this review edition touching the careers of those representative citizens of Forest Grove who are conspicuously identified with its growth and prosper ity, the Goff Bros, come in for very generous mention. Though they are a new enterprise they have established themselves on a very firm footing. They carry all kinds of shelf and heavy hardware and farm machinery of all kinds. H. J. Goff officiated for so,me time as County Commissioner, in N. Dakota prior to pitching his tent in Oregon. W. W. is a distinguished graduate of the Northwestern School of Phar macy, and was among the noted 999 Klondykers of 1900 and spent last 4th of July at Nome. We here call on him to get his speech ready for the 4th of 1904, and award the Goff Bros, a worthy place in these columns. ( PACIFIC GALLERY:— None of the “arts” come nearer our homes and af fections than does photograph. By its means the poorest as well as the rich est, are enabled to preserve the pictured semblance of loved ones and to adorn their walls with pleasing re productions of the best works of the masters. Among the most skillful members of the profession in this part of the state are Mrs. Hoffman and Miss Pitman, of the Pacific Gallery. True artists of talent and attainment whose hearts are in their work. They have operated in this capacity five years, at Forest Grove and were two years at Albany. Prior to embarking in this branch of commercial enterprise they followed the broad and noble field of teaching for several years. DR. C. L. LARGE:— A sketch of the life and labors of Dr. Large is re plete with interest, and furnishes ample data for the pen of the annalyst. He has practiced medicine here for 16 years and has been coroner for six years and served five years on the city council. His mother is a pioneer com ing to this section in ’45 and around her are four sisters, all of whom are living, hale, hearty and vigorous. CORNELIUS & HANCOCK:— Standing among the representative enterprises of Forest Grove are the Fashion Livery stables operated by Messrs. Cornelius & Hancock. Their bus makes all trains and their place is headquarters for a good rig at any hour of the day or night. Transient legal and commercial men all learn of the Fashion Livery Stable as they have established a reputation which needs no encomiums of the press. They are punctual, courteous and reliability is their long suit. MCNAMER & JOHNSON:— Even the briefest resume of this representa tive house cannot fail of interest for it has been replete in interest and continual progress since its organiza tion last Xmas. They carry a stock of ' groceries and meats that are tasty and inviting and the proprietors are pTompt and punctual from the word “ go.” They believe the best is none too good for Forest Grove and the stock carried attests this statement.
