THURSDAY, APRIL 7, ’04 Let Us Encourage Athletics The season for the various athletic games is now upon us so let us briefly consider the relative evil and the relative good arising from the athletic season. Perhaps we are not in a po sition to give an unbiased view as 'we are strongly of the opinion that the benefits have the field. However, we will consider it from both views. The principal arguments against the athletic sports are largely confined to three main ideas. First, those apposing the games owing to certain gambling tend encies involved, together with some Sabbath breaking. Second, the physi cal injury resulting from excessiveness, such as over training, and the rough ness sometimes met with in such games as foot ball. A third reason sometimes given for opposing ath letics in the abstract is, that they de tract from and overshadow the more serious work of the student or other worker. The view of those favoring the main- tanance of athletic sports are to some extent contained in the defence made to the views as expressed above. No one will endeavor to defend gamb ling of any sort as connected with sports and very little of this evil ever appears in the local fields and even this is rarely countenanced. The various games ought not to be condemned for this evil any more than the state or nation is to be condemned for holding elections because people gamble on the election results. The alleged Sab bath breaking is an tn'irely different question and presents some perplexing f.-atures. The pros and cons have been discussed for generations and both have strong arguments in their favor. The strongest argument used in behalf of Sunday games is based upon the fact that as a rule, those playing games on the Sabbath and those attending are unable to take rec reation on week days, and therefore ought not to be denied harmless pleas ure on that day. The same argument ATTTTTTTTrTTTTTttTTTTTTTT^ is used in behalf of the Sunday open Albion. Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Fletcher ac ing of the Lewis & Clark exposition. companied by Mr. and Mrs. R. M.
