Aa I sat on the verauda of the v il lage tavern and looked about me I thought it one of the moat peaceful towns I ever saw and said aa mnch to the justice of the peace who occupied a chair beside me. •‘ Yes, purty peaceful, but” — he re plied as liia right hand went slowly back to hia pistol pocket. “ But what?” X asked. “ But yo’ don't want to mix in when it cornea off. Y o ’r nest way w ill be to go through that door and np stairs, and don't coiue down as long as yo' hear any shoot in. ” " B u t I don't understand, judge. Is there to be any shooting around here?” “ Sartin to b e !" "W hen?” "P u rty quick, I reckon.” “ But what about?” “ W aal,” be drawled as he pointed down the street, " d ’ye see that onery bawg wallerin in the mnd down thar?” "Yea, I see a hog. ” “ He belongs to Sam Battenon, the cooper, und Sam feels mighty tender to'ards that bawg since his w ife died. Now, then, d'ye see that pesky dawg np the street by that shade tree?” “ Yes, X see him ." “ He belongs to Joe Stivers, the har ness maker, UDd Joe thinks so much of him that he makes his children sleep on the floh that the dawg may have a feather bed all to hisself. In abont five minutes that pesky dawg w ill sight that onery hawg, and thar’ll be a row.” “ The dog w ill pitch into the hog, yo* mean ?” "Sartin to.” “ And then” — "A n d then Sam Batterson w ill pitch inter the dawg, and Joe Stivers w ill pitch inter Sam Batterson, and the fust thing yo' know the hall town w ill be pitohin inter each other. A s I said be- fo', yo'd better keep yo'r eyes on that doah onless yo' want to mix in. ” "B u t, judge, why ahonld a little scrap between a hog and a dog lead to” — “ Thar goes the peaky dawg I” ex claimed the judge os he sprang np and started down the stepa, drawing his pistol as he w ent I made for the door and the stairway and reached m y room. The shooting opened lively aDd was well sustained for abont ten minntes. When it appear ed to be over, I descended to the ve randa. The jndge was just coming np the steps from the street. He had his hat in his hand, and there was blood on his cheek where a ballet had gTased it. “ Waal, It's all over till next tim e,” be remarked as he sat down and exam ined his pistol to see how many car tridges were left in the cylinder. "Anybody killed?” I asked. “ One or two, X reckon, and three or four hurt, but it don’t begin to be as lively as usual. The pesky dawg was shot, however, and now Joe Stivers w ill be layin fnr Sam Batterson every day in the year, and thar’ll be no end of pnblie enthoosiasm I” — Detroit Free Frees.
