w ithin this period th» re has been o n lj
six d ays on w h ich no rain fe ll, and those
d a y s o f fair w eath er w ere d istrib u ted or
occurred at variou s tim es tlir ugh out the
period. S u ch is tru ly unusual. A n e x ­
am in ation o f th e record s em b ra cin g a
period o f 24 ye a rs d iscloses 110 case
parallel to th is in th e sp rin g season. The
season o f 1893 w as th e nearest approach
to th e present season, in th is, th a t the
rain s were con tin u o u s th ro u g h o u t Apri
up to M ay th e 7th; th en th ere was a de­
cid ed
ch an ge lor fair and pleasant
w eath er. Thu o n ly M ay on record d u r­
in g w h ich tin.* rain co n tin u e d alrncH
d a ily th rou gh out th e en tire m o n th was
in 1879, but the m onth p rece d in g w as a
good m outh for se e d in g o f grain and
oth er farm w ork. A s a rule, w hen the
first portion o f M ay is stor n y the la ttti
part is fair or vice v ersa. T h e M ays of
1879 an<l *893 a re th e o n ly e x c ep tio n s to
th is rule.

sh o w ery w eath er has occu rred , th ough
th e w eath er o f th e first th ree d ays o f the
past w ek w as a ccep tab le . T u esd ay,

sun sh ine, w ith d ry in g e a ste rly or n orth ­
e rly winds, w ith an occa sio n al sp rin k le

w ell. On th e m orn in g o f th e 12th heavy
frost occured in Ja ck so n and Josep hin t
cou n ties, w h ich w as follow ed b y a ligh i
frost on th e 13th. O n th e m orn in g o!
the 16th snow fell in th e m ou n ta in s and
a lo n g the fo o th ills. T h e su n sh ine was
d eficien t and the ra in fa ll s lig h t ly above
th e average.
Crops— A fte r a p ro lo n ged sp ell o f rain,
cool and in clem en t w eath er, and the
past w eek u n ch a n ged in th is resp ect, tlu
crops are found to be m a k in g a slow
gro w th . T h e w eath er is too cool foi
progress in a n y crop , and th e soil too
wet to adm it o f p lo w in g , seed in g or g a r­
d en in g, th ou gh an a tte m p t w as m ade in
som e section s. Peas and p otatoes ¿re
se ttin g w ell fn C u rry co u n ty. F all-sow n
grain has still a h e a lth y co lo r, e x c e p t on
low ground, w here th e d rain a ge is im per

N o fear is exp ressed co n ce rn in g th est
crops, for a little su n sh in e and w arm ,
life -g iv in g w eath er w ou ld m ak e them as
good as cou ld be d esired . V e r y little
gard en w ork has been done. S om e ex-
press th em selves w ell pleased th a t th ey
h ave m ade no a tte m p t to p la n t garden
tru ck . W hen th e so il is co ld , and su n ­
sh in e d eficien t, ga rd en seed w ill q u ic k ly
rot in the ground.
In S ou th ern O regon a few h av e co m ­
m enced to p la n t corn ; th e few d a y s o f
co m p arative fair w eath er h a v in g dried
th e soil co n sid e ra b ly , b u t th e rain o f th e
la tte r part o f th e w e e k has retarded th is
w ork.
S h o u ld th e w eath er becom e
favorab le, large q u a n titie s o f p otatoes
w ould be plan ted an d m uch oats sown
in th e p lace o f sp rin g w h eat. T h e hop
crop is m a k in g an irreg u la r g ro w th .

F ru it.— C o n ce rn in g th e fru it crop, it
h as ch an ged little sin ce last w eek. C o r­
respondents still rep ort fruit as fa llin g ,

T h ere is no d ou bt th a t th e cool w eath er
is d am agin g to th e fruit. T h e e x te n t o f
d am age can not be a scertain ed u n til
som e warm sp rin g w e a th e r h as had its
effect. T h e w eath er b e co m in g su d d en ly
warm w ould also lie d a m agin g. Pears,
prun es, p eaches and ch e rrie s h ave su f­
fered th e m ost.
S o m e trees are w ell set
w ith th ese fruits, but th e gro w th seem s
to be ch e ck e d , and a s ic k ly look is no-
I ticed. E a r ly a pples h av e suffered also,
but th e late b loom in g apple has a better
prospect.
