The Oregonian is now attacking Mr. Tongue because his views do not coincide with what it claimed for him. It was a delusion that the Oregonian led itself into in im agining that Mr. Tongue the can didate for the U. S. senator was any different from Mr. Tongue the candidate for congressman. His position now is the same as then and it is making many friends for him. Some feared that the Ore gonian’s apparent advocacy was a subtle scheme to defeat him and they rejoice that its malevolence, manifested a year ago but concealed until now in this campaign, is now apparent. Like the Medusa head, upon whomever the Oregonian turns its baleful countenance that one miserably perishes. In the death of John W. Sapping- ton, county treasurer, Washington county lost a faithful servant as well as a citizen whose influence was widely felt.
