Butchers Beat Blacksmiths.
Saturday evening a number of citizens,
in response t ' a call published in the
city papers, met in Vert’s hall to inquire
into the water works question.
Mr.
Rider called the meeting to order and
proposed Mr H. H. Clark for chairman
who was accordingly elected. Mr. Clark
stated briefly the object of the meeting.
Mr. C. M. Keep was elected secretary.
After a short address on the subject
Mr. Rider moved the appointment of a
committee of five to look up the best
means of getting water to the city and
to report at some future time. This pre
vailed and the chair appointed as such
committee, Messrs. Rider, A. Rogers, L.
C. Walker, Wm. Kane and Geo. L.
Smith. Mr. Macrum was asked for his
opinion but expressed himself as favor
ing waiting until the committee reported
something definite before discussing the
matter.
I)r. Crang moved to adjourn
to call of the chairman, which prevailed
and the meeting adjourned.
Since the meeting the water question
has been the leading topic wherever
people have been assembled. The pro
posed plans are infinite in variety and
everyone can find something to his lik
ing, but to submit a proposition which
will give any general satisfaction is an
undertaking which the committee will
find exceedingly difficult.
Saturday afternoon one of the most
hotly contested base ball matches of the
season came otf on the campus diamond.
The butchers and blacksmiths were the
contestants and a large crowd watched
and applauded their efforts. The band
furnished music. Two of the spectators
were struck by a foul ball Many from

ih e playing was vigorous from tile start
marked by heavy batting and speedy

worthy. Adam Beil s base running was
a feature. T. C. McNamer played an
excellent game. Score was 15 to 6 in
favor of the t,„tellers.

At times when the playing became too
rocky an effort was made to improve it
by changing the players’ positions, but
generally unsuccessfully.
Death by Drowning.
The Citizens* Water Committee.
Monday afternoon John and Geo.
Reyeraft and M. Coxe were bathing
in tile Tualatin near a bend in the river.
None of them could swim and they were
keeping in the shallow water when John
went too near the bend and got into
water ten feet deep.
He went under
and it j s supposed he caught a root at
the bottom for he never rose.
After
vain attempts to rescue him the other
hoys found help and the river was drag
ged. After two hours work the body
was recovered. An effort was made to
resuscitate him but it was too late. The
funeral was held from the Cornelius
church at 3 o’clock Tuesday afternoon.
Many friends attended.
The water supply committee appointed
at the citizens’ meeting last Saturday
evening met Monday afternoon in L. C.
Walker’s office and organized by electing

L. C. Walker permanent secretary. On
motion the following sub-committees
were appointed by the chair:
