Dear Folks:
W ell it’s morning, exactly 15
minutes after Saturday. I just got
the boat engineer watch, have
to stay up unitl four this morn
ing to run the boats for
fligh t
quarters.
It is very bright out
now and will be all night.
We
reached
McMurdo Sound this
morning.
Kind of late getting
nere because o f two ships we es
corted down kept getting stuck In
the ice. Then the Nespelin (an
oil tanker) broke one blade
of
one screw in the ice and reduced
our speed to 6 knots.
It
was
really a slow trip down.
W e haven’t received any mall
since we left N ew Zealand. So far
I have received one letter from
you (in San Diego) and one from
grandmother in N ew Zealand.
A t the present time they don’t
know where we are going.. I f we
are to stay here for about 6 or 7
days a group of us from the ship
want to climb Mt. Arabus. It is an
active volcano, approximately 13
! to 14 thousand feet
in height,
com pletely covered with ice and
snow and ras never been climbed.
; Navy personnel tried it last year
and never came back. I f that is
! true, we probably won’t be able
to go. The trip would take about
I 5 or 6 days. Of course its still all
I talk.

I haven’t
bought any Christmas gifts but
have some souvenirs fo r you.
Christmas day we had a won
derful dinner and
Santa Claus
came also. On N ew Years
eve
we were at
L ittle Am erica so
that evening we had a party on
the ice and roasted beef steaks,
seal steaks and penguin.
The
seal and penguin meat were del
icious.
Played basketball, vol
ley ball and baseball. A t Little
America we moved the ship
to
the bay ice (as we do everywhere)
and on New Years
morning it
broke up.
W e le ft that after
noon and
came to McMurdo
Sound. A t the present time we
are going to Cape Hallett
and
back here, then to Lyttleton and
back.
Yesterday I went to church ser
vices held on the ship by a Navy
Chaplain. We had communion at
the same time and Mother I feel
mcch the better for it. I have
n’t had the time or eneryy
be
fore to write but there has been
no mail going out either,
until
now.
I dont nnow o f much else
to write. Last ween they moved
me back to the after
berthing
ocmpartment to be M. A. A.They
figured that if I had
to sleep
there I would make the firemen
(peons) sleeping there clean the
place up.
It was a real hole.
When they inspected on Satur
day they said it looked “ damn
good.”
