; ty of the great structure depends
on it.
When the massive 20-acre con
crete slab of the spillway stilling
basin chute at the Dam here is

safety device.
I f the underdrain system should
fail, engineers say the spillway
and the entire structure would be
endangered. The clay pipe used
on this project is the same mate
rial used in thousands of miles
of sanitary lines used to carry
wastes to disposal plants. Vitri
fied clay pipe is recognized as the
one material that provides all the
qualities necessary to satisfy the
exacting demands of sanitary
structures. Clay pipe resists all
the effects of acids and other
caustic substances that are found
in sewer systems.
The system consists of a net
work of 12-inch vitrified clay
circumference. The pipes are
covered by a two-layer filter of
screened gravel and sand that '
prevents any major infiltration !
of foreign material into the
drain pipes.
Even with all the safeguards,
some clogging deposits will seep
into the pipes through mineral
deposits in the water. To combat
this, engineers have developed a ,
metal “porcupine.” The porcu- •
pine consists of short lengths of l
stainless steel wire rope imbed- J
ded in a cylinder. A stainless i
steel cable is attached to both
ends of the cylinder, and as two •
winches pull it back and forth in
the pipe, it loosens the material,
which is flushed away.
The clay pipe is durable enough
to withstand the steel brush, and
smooth enough to minimize the
mineral deposits.
In addition to the underground
drainage system, there are thou
sands of steel “anchor rods” sunk
into the ground from the spill
way and stilling basin concrete.
The stilling basin — installed
for approximately $7 million —
was the last big contract on the
original coneept of Garrison
Dam.
Final construction on the dam
includes about $20 million worth
of work on power units, pen
stocks, and surge tanks. The
work is scheduled to be completed
late in 1959 or early 1960.
