YOUR SOCIAL SECCRITY
Q: I am self -employed fisher
man, but actually work at m;
business onlv about five month:
out of every year.
I averag«
about $4000
Am I credit«
with a quarter of coverage oni)
1 in the months thatl'm actual!)
working, which means I woulc
only earn two quarters of covet-
age a year?
A: No. This is not
correct
Whenever a self-employed per
son has a net profit from
bis
business of $400 or more in
*
year, he is credited with
foui
quarters of Coverage.If he doe«
not have a net profit of at least
$400, he receives no quarters of
Coverage. Averaging $4000 at
you do, you can
be credited
with four quarters of coverage
each year.
Q: My brother and I operate
s furniture store in partnership
If we employed
our
father,
would his wages be subject to
social security tayes?
I • No, not if you and your bro
ther are the only two partners.
Work by a parent for his sen or
daughter or by a child
under
1 ~1 for his parent or by a wife
lor her husband is not covered
by social security. If, however,
: there was a partner in the busi-
ness who is a non-relative, then
the employment would be cov
ered and subject to social
se
curity tax.
