It means in Clackamas County that should a fire start in unreleased slash, the Clackamas -Marion District may refuse to help fight a fire on unrealsed slash-or, if such services are rendered, the land owner may be charged for ex penses incurred. Ernest tells us that, as a consequence, very large areas in the foothills south and east o f Molalla are virtually unprotected. In order to secure at least a measure of protection the For estry Assn, is asking residents of the area to sign a mutual as sistance pledge as follows I hereby pledge to assist any other landowners signing this mutual assistance agreement when called in case of fire, my help not to exceed 8 hours, they in turn to assist me under somi- lar cirucumstances. In case of injury on the fire line I will not consider the Clackamas Countp Farm Forestry Assn, or any o f its members liable. Signed ......................................... Included in useful articles are first, a sharp axe and a good shovel. And if they are on hand, pulaskis, hazel hoes, back spray pumps, portable power pumps with hose, sledges, wed ges, crosscut, and power saws. Parker advises that it is a good idea to assemble these ar ticles alos in case of fire at home and also says power and 4 Jirrinsville Store [S T A C A D A COM M UNITY The Rev. and Mrs. Kraft of the Baptist Church and baby daughter, Margaret, returned last Satuday evening from a three weeks 7000 mile trip. The two we are think ing of are Magnesium and bor on. Those who follow this col umn will recognize this immed iately. But certain other posisble elemental deficiencies are now under scrutiny of the Soils De partment of OSC, such as moly bdenum. Prelimnary studies in the green house indicate the need for this element in certain Oregon soils growing alfalfa. But don’t dash out and try to purchase and apply molybde num. Our soils textbooks vint age of 1936 does noe even men tion the stuff. However, this el ement is used as a festilizer na- the extensively during recent years in certain Southern states and in New Zealand. As we rememper it four oun ces per acre is the normal rate of application where needed. Four ounces wnerc not needed might do serious damage. We mention it now as a mat ter of possible coming interest. Someone nas become consid erably concerned about infesta tions of poisonous hemlock, large, tall, purple stemmed plant growing here and there near Oswego and scattered pret ty much over the valley floor the connty. We took samples to OSC recently where the weed was instantly identified as such by Weed Speiialist W. R. Fur- tick. He informed us that this plant is only mildlp poisonous espec ially when compared to the lo wer water hemlock found along many small streambeds and swales in the county. Sure it is possible that a child might chew enough of the plant to cause serious discomfort. It is even possible that one might obtain a fatal dosage. But these possibilités do not necessarily mean that existing eras should be sprayed at public expense.lt is safe to say that poison oak causes more discomfort annual ly, a thousand times over. Here is on interesting note from Wilbur Bukhart, County Extension Agent, Washington County. We have noted this cat- | erpillar working in the Corral Creek aea near Wilsonville: Some folks have noticed a strange looking black caterpil lar chewing away at the Cana da thistle patches when they went into the field to spray them. The little fellows seem to have a big appetite and the thistle disappears rapidly. Many hopes have been express ed that the thstle now has an enemy similar to the beetle wheih destroys the goatweed. The caterpillars have been iden tified with those which will turn into the thistle butterfly. They have been around for sometime and appear in con siderable numbers during fav orable insect years. The only trouble is that they have a lot of enemies in the way of paras itic insects and attempts to fur ther their development have long ago failed. The insect is now classified as an enemy of the thistle but not a significant possibility in thistle control. Thop go through the same gen eral life cycle of trouble as the tent caterpillar and only thrive in one or two years out of every ten.If it weren’t for this troub le we could look to them for causing some real misery for the Canadian thistle. As for the present, we just about have to forget about the insects doing a job o f controlling the thistle for us. 1 j CATSUP For Your Salads Rib Steaks i hand spray equipment should be filled with water for instant use inasmuch os a small amount of water is extremely useful before a fire has gained head way. The Kiefls tried t0 show them all of the Oregon scenery in one jaunt by taking them ar ound Mt. Hood, up to Timber- line, and back by way of Bon neville Daf and through Port land. After seeing the country, the Ronshausens think this is the most beautiful part of the country in the United States. Being a former Los Angeles resident myself, I thoroughly agree. Most of the farmers around here are gettinv pretty dis- yusted with the weather. It rains jus enough to keep them from harvesting their seed crops, but not enough to make the pastures grow. One nice thing about it— it’s good wea ther for chickens. The regular meeting o f the Springwater Grange was held Saturday evening with Master Del Gant in sharge.
