Winston. The shift took place
two or three years ago. Named
after one of the most honored
and respected fam ily in Doug
las County and one of them,
Fred, now lives near Estacada
w here he has gained the stand
ing his kin have in Douglass.
Most everybody around here
suspects th at he was attracted
to this section by his wife,Ma
bel, who was here for several
years before him as Mrs.
Smith, but who now shares his
country home here. Mabel was
born and raised in Douglass
County. Her father was a Th
ompson, her mother a Nioholls,
and together with another w e
ll -known family the Riddles,
were all mixed up with the
Winstons. It was Estacada’s
real good fortune to have such
good citizens as Fred and Ma
bel come to Estacada and be
come permanent residents a-
mong us.
The Oregon City Enterprise
should be voted a special pla
que for preserving for posterity
a momentous event which oc
curred at Currinsville in Jan
uary of 1906. The Enterprise
copied it from the Estacada
News: New Year’s morning
Mrs. F. Wehreim was the her
oine in a meeting with a coy
ote. She was on the way to her
brother, J. P. Steinman’s, near
Currinsville, when she came
face to face with an animal, the
likes of which she had never
seen. It was about 30 feet away,
but upon seeing Mrs. WehreMn
the beast quietly crept away.
Upon arriving at her brother’s
she told of her strange meeting,
and three of the bravest hunt
ers in the country, Steven Kir
lhen, Philip Stednman, and Nor
man Linn, with two hounds,
started in persuit of Mr. Coyote.
The dogs soon had the scent;
and followed chase of an hour
and a half. Finally the coyote
happened too close to Norman
who sent a ball from his never-
erring rifle straight to the an
rmal’s heart. It was a fine shot
as the coyote was passing the
marksman Noah Stongley who
will now have a rival for the
best shot around here.
It was stated
