Naval Re­ serve to be Kept Only for Dura­ tion of War According to an announcement made this week in Washington by or­ der of Secretary of the Navy Knox, “ All men enlisting in the Nava] Re­ serve will be retained on active duty thruout the period of the national emergency but they will be released as soon as their services can be spar­ ed regardless of the length of time remaining in their enlistment.” Enlistment in the U .S. Naval Re­ serve is for four years but if a man enlists and the emergency ends with­ in a period of several months he wiil be returned to his civilian job as soon as possible after the emergency is over and will not be required to com­ plete his four year term in active service. Four classes of service in the U. S. Naval Reserve need men urgently today. They are Class V-3 which in­ cludes radio and communications; V-5 .aviation; V-6 for trade special­ ists or men desiring trade or vocation­ al training; V-7 fleet officers. A more detailed outline of each class follows. Men witht specialized training in radio, searchlight and semaphore sig­ naling or Morse telegraphy may bo enrolled in Class V-3 the communica­ tions class of the Naval Reserve. These men will be enlisted as petty officers wiith ratings according to their degrees of proficiency. Pay for men enrolling in this group ranges from $60 a month for a petty offi­ cer third class to $99 a month for a chief petty officer An additional al lowance of $1.15 per day is made for men with dependents who have the rating of petty officer second class or higher. A man with at least two years of college education who desires to en. ter naval aviation will be enlisted as a seaman second class in Class V-5 of the Naval Reserve. A fter a months preliminary training the V-b recruit will become a naval aviaton cadet and will be sent to one of the three principal naval flight training cen­ ters, Pensacola, Fla., Jacksonville, Fla., or Corpus Christi, Tex. On com. pletion of this advanced course which requires approximately seven month.-- the V-6 will be designated as a na­ val aviator and will be commissioned as an ensign in the U .S. Naval Re­ serve. During the first month of training V-5 recruits are paid $36. On com­ pletion of the first months training the V-5 recruit is designated as a naval aviation cadet and will be paid $75 a month plus $1 per day living expenses Upon, commission as an ensign his pay will be increased to approximately $245 a month and in addition he will receive regular pay bonuses of $500 for each year he serves in active duty after the training period . Class V.6 in "the Naval Reserve offers opportunities for men with specialized training to continue their trades and at the same time serve their country. This group includes specialists of any Kind such as elec­ tricians, carpenters .machinists, sten­ ographers, accountants, plumbers, cooks, bakers and many other trader and vocations. These men will upon be given ratings in accordance with the amount of previous specialized training they have had. Men with no previous specialized training will be enlisted in Class V-6 as apprentice seamen with pay of $21 a month. Directly following en­ listment the new recruit will be sent to one of four naval training stations for a short period. At the training station the apprentice seamen will be given an aptitude tesst and if he passes this test satisfactorily he will be sent to a navy trade school. Ap­ proximately 5500 men are admitted to navy trade schools each month. Deputy sheriff Joe Shobe found that the man apparently fired two shots one passing thru his clothing not touching the flesh .The second bullet entered the body.
