The repo.! also points out that farm labor anu other costs have advanced mateiially during the past two years and may be expected to inc, ease further altho gains made in farm prices for eeggs, milk, meat and wool have been mor rapid. The longer-time outioc'x is prob lematical as animal numbe s are in creasing and much uncertainty exists as to the duration of the present ex tremely high level o f consumer pur chasing power. One indicator of thi current strength o f consumer purch asing power ia the record high leve o f industrial production already 60 per cent greater than before the Eu ropean war started. Additional strength is given to thi market demand fo r animal products by the government call for more milk, meat and eggs in the food-for-de- fense program. These conditions have heped boost fa m prices fo r daily products 35 percent since the war started, meat 66 percent, eggs and chickens 30 percent and wool 63 per cent. Further increase in the level o f industrial production appears pro bable within the next year. The demand for milk products is being emphasized by the government particularly to supply consumers m this country and for shipment to Eng land and much more meat and eggs are wanted in 1942. Although prices fo r feed are higher than a year ago the total supply o f feeds in the U.S is larger than last year aid fa r above average. The number o f animals i enough greater to slightly more than offset the increase in feed supplies, especially o f grain. Hay supplies in relation to livestock are as large as last year and near a record level. W ith respect to beef cattle the re. port says that "from a long-time view point the outlook for cattle would be better if marketings in 1941-42 were heavy enough while pri ces are high to stop the increase in number's. Already there are enough cattle on hand to provide more beef and veal per capita than has been consumed fo r many years, although not as much as a quarter century ago.” This is in line with the food- for-defense goals fo r Oregon. County Quotas on Food for Defense Being Set County USDA agricultural defense boards in all Oregon s 36 counties will soon be undertaking the job of setting up production goals fo reach county’s contribution to the 1942 farm defense program. The state U SD A defense board meets October 5 to review data on past and possible production, pro cessing plant capacities and other factors related to a breakdown o f the state production goals into sectional and county goals. The board is con. suiting with land use planning com mitteemen .farm organization lead ers and agricultural specialists to determine a distribution o f the goals that will bring the prodhetion o f the needed foods and still be in line with long-range land hse programs. Robert B. Taylor, o f Pendleton, chairman o f the state board declared that the board is seeking practical methods o f stepping up the output o f milk, eggs, beef and vegetables in accordance with the state goals but to accomplish the increase on the basis o f sound farming principles.
