A ll told the Ford consumed only
25.8 gallons o f gas in covering the
entire distance av an average speed

entry completed the course well un

It was the third consecutive year
that Ford has proved victor over ot
her leading volume production cars in
its price class the local dealer point
ed out.
Reliability o f the record establish
ed by the Ford car was attested to by
A A A officials who declared that this
year’s course was ideal fo r economy
demonstration. Because o f the great
distance to be covered in the 14 H
hours allowed and the varying weath
er conditions encountered the run
was as close to actual driving condi
tions as such a contest could be it
was agreed.
E very car was forced to obey traf
fic laws explicitly and coasting 04
trick driving o f any kind was not al
lowed. Moreover the strictly stock
model Ford sedan met and overcame
virtually every type of driving haz
ard stopping in city traffic, twisting
and turning on narrow mountain
roads,, steep grades to climb and all
kinds o f weather.
From a point several miles outside
Los Angeles to the Canyon itself the
Ford was buffeted by strong winds
from suddenly varying directions. At
several times in the first 300 miles,
o f the course to Las Vegas, Nevada,,
namely while climbing-the 4300-foot
Cajon pass, crossing the Mojave de-
tert and climbing again to 5600 feet
»cross the Mountain pas*, the Class
B champion budeed unusually strong
stubborn head winds.
