T h eir i chased nine th o u sa n d com position THE ORIGIN OF HALLOWEEN Halloween is a very ancient festival, whose origins probably antedate recorded history, but appears to have been the outgrowth of the custom of lighting sacred fires on prescribed occasions. In olden times an essential fea ture of the celebration was the lighting of a bonfire at nightfall by each household. In Ireland and in parts of Scotland a similar festival, called Beltane, was observed by lighting two fires close together, when both persons and animals would pass be tween them in the belief that disease would thereby be warded off. Accounts of such a ceremony were recorded as early as about the year 908 A. D. In Germany similar rites were held with a view of appeasing evil spirits, these also being observed with cer tain variations in Spain and Italy. China and Japan hold ceremonies for the entertainment of ghosts, when the streets are lined with lanterns.* It is said that some Amer-* ican Indian tribes had similar customs. Running through the history of Halloween is the idea that spirits, mostly evil ones, were abroad on that night, which idea doubtless gave rise to the modern custom of playing pranks, such as ringing door bells, carrying away gates and generally displacing anything lying around loose. Fortune telling and other mysterious proceedings! naturally came to be features of the observance. Halloween comes on the night of October 31, an oc casion of delight for the young, but of apprehension for those who are likely to be the victims of ghostly pranks. -------- oOo-------- w ork is betw een O regon C ity and C arver. The charge is made that nothing has been done for I the ex-soldier, that promise after promise for relief had | been made, only to be forgotten or disregarded. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The soldier has been given everything their organization has asked for in the way of legislation. Adjusted compensation, provisions for the best of care for the disabled, rehabili tation for those who were partially disabled, and free hospitalization for all ex-service men, regardless of whether illness was due to war service, are some of the things the present republican administration has done for the men who served the nation during 1917 and 1918. Nothing further is being asked for the relief of the soldier, and the efforts of their greatest organization, the American Legion, are being directed more than ever be fore into channels other than that of legislation for the veterans. Ex-service men can not ask for more fair laws than are now on the statute books, passed by a republican administration. -------- oOo-------- A New Orelans man rolled a peanut through the street with his nose to pay a world series bet.
