HARDWARE “The Winchester Store” BARTON Rivalry between schools for athletic honors is de sired at all times, but often this rivalry becomes too enthu siastic. An unfortunate circumstance came to view Fri I Paints, Oils, Roofing, Builders’ Hardware day in the school game at Sandy. The Sandy school was defeated here two or three weeks ago, taking their defeat in good humor, which is more than can be said for some of the Estaeada people, even after one of Sandy’s “stars” had been excluded from the game with no more reason than there was for excluding one or more of the members of the local team. Sure we all like to see the home team win, but far = Estaeada, Oregon better to lose than win dishonestly. There is no such charge in this case, but win or lose, it’s all a pail of the “EVERYTHING FOR THE BUILDER” game, and the true sportsman can stand defeat as well as earned victory. If there is any need of an officer being on duty here in the day time, the editor does not know what it is. But a night watchman is necessary. Two occurrences since Sunday prove this. It would be but little more expense to the city to change the hours of duty of the marshal, and it would be a big saving to the citizens. ----------- oOo--------- Land P laster, 100 lbs. $1.00 Fred A. NOW FOR A REAL CLEAN-UP CAMPAIGN No longer does the excuse of no city dump apply. The News is certainly pleased to announce that the city fathers have acquired a dumping ground and that pians are being made for a general clean-up. And while we’re at it, let’s do a thorough job. More people will visit the city this summer than ever be fore in a similar period of time. Let’s make the old town respectable, and increase our own self respect. ----------- oOo----------- Attention of the editor was called recently to a news item in the country correspondence to the effect that ‘Tom Smith was enlarging his strawberry patch by planting more strawberry plants.’ The Topeka Journal asserts that ‘pretty colored sandals are now being worn on the feet.’ We do not know where else the sandals would be worn, neither do we know of any other way in which Mr. Smith could increase the size of his strawberry patch. ----------- oOo------------ The announcement that Estaeada is to have a real Fourth of July celebration this year is good news. Every citizen should feel that it is his or her celebration and give the band every bit of help possible. Funds will be needed, and so will your work in promoting the affair. The success of the undertaking depends upon the degree of co-operation given the band by the individual citizen of the town and community. ----------- oOo----------- One more week and the species known as the candi date will disappear, for a while, at least.
