front. Fifty men are now employed
and others are being recruited to
assist in the development of the huge
project.

EQUALIZING ASSESSMENTS
An interesting feature in the pri
mary race for the office of Clacka
mas county assessor is the introduc
tion by Douglas Johnson, republican
candidate, of a new plan for equaliz
ing assessments. His plans, which is
incorporated in his filing statement,
is based on similar plans now in suc
cessful opeiatiun in Multnomah and
Coos counties.
The grange has been working to
establish such a system in this county
for some time. They have felt that
the present system is inequable and
haphazard in its operation and they
have approved the newer and fairer
methods employed in Coos county.
Mr. Johnson holds that there should
be an adaptation of the methods used
in Multnomah county for the great
city problem which has sprung up on
both sides of the Willamette river.
At the same time there aer advant
age. in the Coos plan which may be
used as a basis for our rural assess
monte. The rapid development of
both section makes i[ imperative that
a modern appraisal system be in
stalled to keep up with the changes in
ownership and valuation, he con
