H E N I was twenty-one 1 had been a husband three years, und a father one year. The weekly sti pend o f $18 on which I braved the adventure o f marriage didn’t go far toward the providing for the needs o f three souls. I \yas heavily oppressed by d eb t; I must have owed at least $100, or more, and something had to be done about it. So I wrote a story — because I had heard that as much as a cent a word was sometimes paid for stories, and couldn't think o f any other way to raise the wind. I had always been scribbling, more or less aimlessly. W The story was called “ The Death o f the Dawn.” I submitted it to my father for an opinion. He was a vet eran o f the Civil war and an old newspaper m an ; and it so happened that my manuscript got into his hands at u time when he was entertaining another veteran ot that conflict, though one that had fought on the southern side. Col. Prentiss Ingraham — author o f something like over two thousand novels, o f which “ Monte zuma the Merciless” attained a sale o f more than tw o million copies. Now my story was a Civil war story and for that reuson, I presume, those two old soldiers liked it and [»raised it and assured me that any editor in iiis right senses would jump at the chance to publish it. It must have been that all the edi tors who saw it were imbeciles— or something was wrong. Many years later I sold that story to Anna Steese Richardson fo r the McClure short story service. It fetched $2o for copy right and all rights.” — Louis Joseph Vance. T O D A Y : Louis Joseph vnnee is a famous novelist and can look back on those early experiences with the proverbial and alleged twinkle In his eye. At one tim e “ The Death o f the Dawn,” which contained five thou sand words, was accepted by an editor at five cents a word, but before the astounded author had made the neces sary changes the mugazine suspended publication. ( © by McClure Newspaper Syndicate.) \ ¥ T O M A N ’S most important respon- W sibilitv in life is nor relation to the social needs o f her age. It is Im possible to correctly appraise any age separated from the youth o f that age. The future generation Will reilect the standards o f the children o f the pres ent generation. Directing the spirit of youth in the ways o f stimulating reali ties is a tremendously Important task. The most important thing a person can do is to mold a human life and set it voyaging toward eternity. The de velopment o f a child reflects the char acter o f a mother. Like mother like child. A woman’s place In the world determines the progress o f civilization because o f her intlueuce upon the child life o f the age. What then is the meaning o f wom an’s struggle for freedom? In what light is her entry Into the economic world to he interpreted? Has her larger freedom come through the neg lect o f duties In the home? Has her liberty made her any less “ mother” ? Woman has taken her [»lace beside man in the counting house, store and office. Her participation In industry is a marked characteristic o f the pres ent age. Her name shines luminously in the realms o f science and the arts. These privileges are hers, achieved not through the neglect o f other duties, but rather made possible by the inven tion o f labor-saving devices which re lieve her o f many o f the exacting de tails o f housekeeping. It is leisure and not neglect o f domestic responsi bilities that has enabled woman to re value herself In the light o f her new liberty. The leisure thus released is directed toward important and con structive ends. Through her self-as sertion in the economic and industrial world woman Is liftin g the level of life through the Infusion o f her ideals into the youth o f a work a day world By the Intelligent application o f these ideals to life, like leaven in the meal, woman is becoming an Increasingly important factor In the progress of civilization. <©. 1927.
